To activate Win 11, what types of older license are good?

Just a minute! Since you have a Windows 7 Professional key, you can use it to activate Windows 11 Pro. Home version is incompatible with the key, so it won't activate. Upgrade to Pro using the key.

During installation you are asked to log into your Microsoft Account using your account email address. A successful log-in means your W10 or W11 machine is good to go.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. On the new Win 11 Home machine I went to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. Is that the right place?

If your Windows 7 Professional key doesn't work directly, use the generic Windows 10 Pro key to upgrade to Pro first and then use the Windows 7 Professional key to activate. Sorry, I don't know what is the generic key, but you can Google it.

Before you mess anything up it is a sensible precaution to make a system image with something like Macrium Reflect Free. That would mean you could restore the system image and get back to where you started if it all goes wrong.

To upgrade Home to Pro you can change the installed key to the generic Windows 10/11 Pro key.

You will have to be disconnected from the internet to do this. If you stay connected then Windows will check on the Microsoft activation servers to see if the PC has a digital licence for Pro. It will refuse to upgrade Home to Pro if it does not have one.

After upgrading to Pro, when you connect to the internet it will say Windows Pro is not activated. Now change the installed key to the Windows 7 Pro key. This should activate it.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. I don't know if you need to disconnect from the internet, but yes, the generic key upgrades Home to Pro (unlocks all features), but of course it doesn't activate Windows. So you change the generic key with your Windows 7 Professional key to activate. If the generic key is not accepted (very rare), you can force it with the appropriate command in Powershell. I don't remember it now, tell me if you need it. Another way is to open Windows Store, search for Windows 11 Pro. You will see you can buy a Pro key, but if I remember correctly there is also an option to insert a key you have already purchased. Insert your Windows 7 Professional key to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.

Yes, you do need to disconnect. If you try to upgrade Home to Pro with the generic key while connected, then it will only let you if this PC already has a digital licence for Pro on the activation servers. If you disconnect it can't check the activation servers, so will let you upgrade to Pro (but it won't be activated). This is what you get if you're online when using the generic Pro key on a W11 Home PC that has no digital licence for Pro.

It wasn't always that way. The online check for a digital licence was first seen in Windows 10 version 1709.
