Touchpad problem fixed by shutdown but not by restart

On one of my laptops, I experience regular erratic responsiveness from my touchpad. After booting, it will work fine for perhaps several hours, then out of the blue the cursor will 'fight' my touchpad input.

I've just discovered that this issue is not fixed by a restart, but it is fixed by shutting down and then booting up. My question is: what Windows functions would survive a restart?

A fresh synaptics driver can also be reinstalled from the HP website followed by a new restore point.

Strange. No touchpad option at HP. I'll check Synaptic.

I'm pleasantly surprised to report that when the touchpad began acting up, the HP hardware diagnostic test 'saw' it and reported that it had not passed the test. I'm currently trying the fixes suggested.

Some touchpads use the USB bus. Have you checked in Device Manager for its properties. Look for a power management tab. There might be an option for the computer to sleep the device.

HP page suggesting fixes for touchpad problems. The suggestion to turn the touchpad off was interesting as, once turned off, can't control cursor to turn it back on. Fortunately my touch screen came to the rescue. Then I powered off and pressed the power buttom for 30 seconds. Finally, I changed Power Options from high performance to balanced and my fan runs less. 24 hours later, no more touchpad problems... touch wood.

It would be nice to view the HP diag failure (before and after).

Next time. As I seem to have fixed my problem, I can no longer get a 'before'.

Opportunity knocked! Here are screenshots of the HP diag. On the second screen, I was fully unable to move the cursor to the left.

BTW, touchpad dysfunction came on at a time of heavy CPU activity and went away with time.

HP had removed the HP diagnostic error codes.

They may have information by telephone.

The HP UEFI hardware diagnostic error codes may be available in the BIOS (F2 or F10)

If the problem reoccurs with heavy load you can try to see if it is reproducible with software stress tests as needed.

Disable touchpad when USB mouse is connected. Next time it happens, Plug in a usb mouse to determine if it is the touchpad only that is having issues
