Solved Trying to install Windows 11 in Hyper-V problem

The 'phone call should hopefully clear things up. If I remember correctly, the automated system tends to choke if the same Activation Key is re-used within 6 months of a previous registration.

If I remember correctly I had to call MS twice about activation. The first was when I did some hardware changes and Windows was deactivated. The second time was when I was upgrading from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro through the MS Store. After the update instead of Pro I had the Enterprise version. The tech had me use the generic Pro key to switch to Pro.

I was doing some thinking about not being able to get the sound working in my Windows 11 VM. Could the fact that I was running Hyper-V as Admin while being signed into my user account have caused my problem. I know very little about Hyper-V except that I have tried it a few times and always went back to VMware Player.

You have to be connected in enhanced mode for sound to be available.

Also, you have to have Remote Desktop Connection (RDP server) enabled in settings.

A Windows Home guest VM does not have RDP Server, so it is will only run in Basic Mode and, hence, no sound.

There is a huge difference between illegal and violating the EULA. Illegal involves facing criminal charges in court. A violation of a EULA with no intent of making a large profit from it is hardly a criminal act. For example I doubt that criminal charges have ever been brought against a person who reuses an OEM product key from a computer they previously dismantled. And I am NOT suggesting that anyone in this thread has done so.

Without rereading all the post I think I was the one who first used the term illegal. I have two Windows 8.1 home retail license. One key I'm using to test the Windows 11 Dev build in VMware 16 Player and the other key I'm trying to use to run the Windows 11 Dev build in Hyper-V. I wanted to use Hyper-V to run the VM because VMware 16 player doesn't have TPM 2.0 and every time I do a update I have to remove a .dll file to get it to install. A work around that I'm sure MS will close in time. Now that I know I'll never get sound working in Hyper-V because I'm installing the home version of Windows 11 and I don't have a spare Pro key I'll just stay with running the Windows 11 Dev builds in VMware 16 Player.

I gave up on Hyper-V (the Home thing was the deal-breaker) - VMWare Pro suits me much better (for testing apps and stuff) anyway I posted a workaround here for VMware Player.. dunno if it works on other's PC's as it may have my hardware in it..

Yeah - One weakness of HyperV is running Home only in basic mode as it does not have an rdp server. There used to be a way of adding it but no longer works - MS closed up the loophole.

However, for Windows Pro (+), Hyper-V is far more efficient as it is a type 1 hypervisor.

I actually installed W11 Home in a Linux KVM but never quite worked out how to install TPM emulation. Problem is every Linux distro is different and I could not find specific ubuntu solution.

I'm now running Windows 11 Dev build in a VMware 16 Player and in Device Manager it shows TPM 2.0. The strange part is that it is activated and the key is not the same as the key that my desktop is activated with. I'm goin to check the keys on my other desktop and my laptop to see what key they are activated with. If I remember correctly My Win 11 Pro VM was from the leaked ISO so I don't know if that is why it's activated or not. Is there any way that file could have registered your key? I'm going to stop the VM until I find out what is going on. I don't want to violate the Windows EULA.

I checked and the Pro key doesn't match any of my keys. The Win 11 home VM is activated with the Windows 8.1 key I used when I installed it. If the key is my key it must be from my old HP desktop. It is stored away and would be a job digging it out and setting it up just to check the key. I'm not going to run the Windows 11 Pro VM until I find out if the key is OK to use.

The file worked on my Windows 11 Pro and Home VM's by just changing the file on the existing VM's. They both show TPM 2.0 in Device Manager. On first start after entering the password I had to browse to the VM's because the name of the VM's changed. Now I just have to enter the Password and then run the VM. Now I just need to test it when the next build is released.

Good to hear - the .vmx I posted does not have my key as I set it up as "I will install OS later option" - therefore there is no violation of the EULA.

@Superfly, I forgot to mention that I downloaded ShowKeyPlus from the MS Store in my home build and that when I run it the box is blank. It actually does work, It just doesn't show in the box. I blindly clicked were I thought the save option was and I was able to save the info to a file in Notepad. The problem has something to do with my using Window 11 in a VM. When I ran it in the Pro build it was faded but did work.

Yeah, I recall you mentioning this before... did you download 1.1.17.0? on which build is it misbehaving? - I think it has to do with dpi or something but I can't replicate so dunno for sure.

I decided to setup my old HP laptop and it was the key (Retail not OEM) that I used when I installed the leaked version of Windows 11. I want to keep the key on the HP desktop so I deleted the VM.

Edit: I meant to say Desktop not laptop.

With the file from Superfly I am now running the Win 11 Home Dev build in a VMware 16 Player and it is using TPM 2.0. I also learned that for Hyper-V I would need to be running the Pro version instead of Home to get sound working. I do have one Pro key I could use but I want to keep it for my old HP desktop. I'm going to mark this as solved and hope it helps others in the future.
