WIndows 11
I am currently using windows 11 on the laptop and when I boot from usb to do a fresh install it says there is no drive. diskpart doesnt even see it. I dont get it. I can reboot and use the system so how is there no drive? System 2, this all started because i was just going to replace the drive with an ssd, but i couldnt see the ssd. So I put the old drive back in and decided to just wipe and reinstall Windows. It boots and works very slowly, but if i reboot to usb the drive is not there, I have tried to disable secure boot and that did nothing, I also read something about needing an rst driver, i have a 11th gen in my other laptop and that isnt needed to reinstall windows on it. any ideas are appreciated

It's probably because your UEFI bios is set to raid (if older laptop) or set as Intel® VMD in 11th Generation and greater Intel® Core™ Processors That be the case the install process will not see your drives. You can do one of two things. The easiest is to set disk mode to AHCI instead. (disable VMD if you have a newer processor)Then the install process will recognize the drive. Otherwise, it is necessary to load the Intel® Rapid Storage Controller driver (IRST) at the "load driver" step in the installation process if your processor is Intel. AMD processors have their own RAID drivers.. You do not give the model of your laptop or any other specifics in your system specs section of your forum profile so I can not tell you which driver to load if you go that route.
Here is the installation tutorial that tells you how. Step 10
Clean Install Windows 11 Clean Install Windows 11 Tutorial

NOTE: if you laptop has 2 drives I strongly suggest you disconnect your secondary drive until Windows is installed.

In case you run out of options, I would just create a portable version of windows on a UBS drive/Portable SSD drive and use it that way, instead of trying to full install it on that internal drive. I say if all else fails for you thats what I would do, cause im sure it would be alot cheaper then trying to either repair or buy new.

Ok, thank you for your help. I am now installing windows 11 with rst driver. Why does my other 11th Gen Intel not require this though?

It boils down to how the OEM optioned uefi bios. With newer machines raid/vmd has become pretty much the normal default setting these days. You've already installed IRST now so the point is moot, but I'll explain my reasoning for anyone else who comes across this post.

Unless a machine is equipped with an Intel Optane memory module ( Intel Optane memory HAS to run IRST driver. These are becoming rare since Intel discontinued optane.) or a customer explicitly wants to use a raid array, I always disable raid/vmd in bios if I have to do a clean install. This makes the users drives visible during future installs without having to mess with installing drivers during installation, which non-techie people would not know how to do.

Another reason I disable raid/vmd during a clean install is a user may want to upgrade his nvme in the future. Some nvme drives (Samsung for one) has its own driver along with Samsung Magician that a user may want to use. It's my understanding that third-party drivers for NVMe PCIe SSDs are not supported with NVMe set in RAID mode. They are supported if one is using the standard Microsoft nvme controller driver.
While a working system optioned as raid/vmd can be changed back to ahci mode to allow one to use a third party nvme driver, theres a lot more to it other than simply changing the option in bios. This results in a BSOD. By setting a system up as AHCI from the get-go prevents this situation from happening if one upgrades his drive.

Intel touts IRST having advantages, but for normal use I've not found any difference in using the standard MS nvme express controller driver over Intel IRST driver. As far as speeds, for my 10th generation cpu, my speeds are a little better without IRST.
