This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected for your account in Windows 11.

If your Windows 11 device (ex: laptop) has a built-in precision touchpad and you like to use an external USB or Bluetooth mouse, you can set to automatically disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected and automatically enable the touchpad when the mouse is disconnected.

Option One

Turn On or Off Leave Touchpad On when Mouse Connected in Settings


1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Bluetooth & devices on the left side, and click/tap on Touchpad on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Touchpad to expand it open. (see screenshot below step 4)

4 Check (on - default) or uncheck (off) Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected for what you want. (see screenshot below)

5 You can now close Settings if you like.




Option Two

Turn On or Off Leave Touchpad On when Mouse Connected using REG file


1 Do step 2 (on) or step 3 (off) below for what you want.

2 Turn On Leave Touchpad On when Mouse Connected

This is the default setting.


A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad]
"LeaveOnWithMouse"=dword:00000000

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 Restart the computer to apply.

8 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Is there a way to undo this? I've downloaded and installed the .reg files, but just in case I want to reverse it in the future, is there a file to uninstall it?

There's separate on or off REG files, so you can use the opposite of what you used to undo it.

In Settings, I have no option to "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected" Am I missing something?

In Regedit, the dword choices are 1 and 0.

Hello, :alien:

Usually when this setting is not available, it means you do not have a "Precision Touchpad". The registry value data will not be the same if not a precision touchpad.

You can check your touchpad's software settings to see if it may have its own setting for this instead.

Setting this manually to 0 worked to turn off the touchpad when the Bluetooth mouse is connected. So your fix worked to get me to the right place.
What doesn't get disabled are the two mouse button equivalents at the top of the Lenovo touchpad. I still accidentally hit one or the other occasionally.

Does your Lenovo laptop have its own OEM touchpad settings that may be used for this instead?

I'm not sure if this below applies to your specific Lenovo X1 Carbon laptop, but hopefully it's close enough to help.

I had looked at all the settings that are shown in those links. They all seem to refer to enabling the touchpad. None show any settings for turning off the touchpad when mouse is active. That's why I came to ElevenForum. Your OP gave me the way to the answer I needed. So thank you again.

To be clear, in the Registry Precision Touchpad settings, the one for the touchpad I used is in:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad]
LeaveOnWithMouse
That is the entry where I set the dword to 0.

Just as a followup, turning off the touchpad doesn't turn off the two buttons over the touchpad, equivalent of left and right mouse buttons. I find I am frequently touching one of those buttons and getting into menus I don't want.

Do you know any way to turn off the touchpad buttons as the touhpad itself is turned off?
