Solved Unable to install W11 Home on Hyper-v VM

Hello,

First as requested here's my W11 Pro version information:

I am unable to create a Hyper-v VM. I keep getting all sorts of crazy errors. My situation is wacky and unusual. I have 2 vastly different laptops.

HP DV7 which is 12 yrs old and running W10 Pro
MSI Katana GF66 which is 1.5 years old running W11 Pro

Both have everything enabled for the Hypervisor to run and it does run on both.

The 12 yr old HP has ZERO and I mean ZERO problems creating and running VMs
(UPDATE AFTER ORIGINAL POSTING) BUT THEY ARE RUNNING WINDOWS 10 OS
The 1.5 yr old MSI Katana is able to get through the initial config process of creating the VM themselves but they are not able to install W11 Home

I am picking Generation 1 for the generation of the Hyper-v machine and assigning 6096MB RAM along with setting virtualization for the memory (I gave myself a buffer on the size) and picking a random storage size of 250G for the VHD. I get through the VM setup process perfectly. When I start and connect to the machine it loads the setup file from the .iso I created through MS's media creation tool and when it gets to the point in the process of starting the actual installation process it gives the error that the machine doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

I tried doing a Generation 2 VM and got different and multiple errors. I checked and I have TPM 2.0 enabled and I did enable the appropriate security for the multi-cores but it still fails miserably for that. I get black screens that freeze along with this error when I tried to create a Gen 2 again from scratch:

I do not understand why my ancient 12 yr old HP can seamlessly successfully create VMs and my new Katana can't and keeps coughing up furballs! (sorry I am a long time cat owner).......This is frustrating.

According to Microsoft Windows 11 requires Generation 2.

My Windows 11 computer is out for repairs right now so I am showing the settings for my Windows 10 desktop.

Notes:

The desktop has 32GB RAM and 8/16 cores but only the minimum 2 processors and 4GB RAM are used for the Windows 11 Home VM
The HDD and DVD use the SCSI controller

BTW, My ASUS laptop has Windows 11 Pro. It has a Ryzen 7 8/16 core CPU and 16GB RAM. I have created several VMs on it using Hyper-V including Windows 11.

Hi there

(All women are wonder women !!!!! - at least in my experience -- where would I be without them -- running to shops, acting as 24/7 taxi drivers, taking kids to school, hospital, doing other countless tasks .... etc) !!

Anyway as Mr ed says you need a type 2 VM.

Also you must ensure that the Virtual disk is GPT, and has an EFI partition (formatted fat32) . Allow Network discovery on your HOST and allow remote connections too (on the HOST via control panel) -- You''l have to do this on the VM too but that's after you've successfully created and booted into a Guest.

Not a requirement for W10, In the VM config also ensure secure boot is on -- again not a requirement for W10.

Normally HYPER-V can create Windows VM's without any issues and runs the VM's quite nicely.

Sure that's true but if you let the Windows 11 setup create the partitions it needs that is what you will get. There is no need for the user to know or care about such details.

I found a YT video that gave a successful tip on how to bypass that frustrating UEFI & Bootloader error. The person said to hold down the spacebar and then while holding down the spacebar THEN start the VM. That worked...No annoying UEFI/Bootloader error. It went right into the W11 installation .iso wizard but STILL dead ends me at the generic, not helpful, no usable information error about "does not meet minimum system requirements" with a NOT clickable URL and that URL contains useless also generic, not specific information and it does NOT reference anything at all to do with "Minimum system requirements" for installing W11 on VMs......(can I please politely rant here - "MICROSOFT GET YOUR CRAP TOGETHER AND GIVE USEFUL DETAILED INFORMATION AND FIX THESE PROBLEMS?").....How do I figure out what I am not setting up right that does NOT meet MS's dumb "minimum system requirements"?

There is nothing mysterious about the minimum system requirement for a Windows 11 VM. It is the same as if were a real computer.

No, but it would be helpful to have the error state the EXACT criteria that is missing.....And VMs are being used more and more these days so it would be helpful to have it list out the criteria and remind people to make sure the TPM 2.0 is ENABLED.
