Unable to make C:\Program Files NOT read-only

Take a look at the post by Les. Read only attributes on a folder aren’t always what they seem.

I copied C:\PrusaSlicer to C:\Program Files\PrusaSlicer and ran the exe from there. This is the permissions for the exe:
4.jpg
I've tried to change the permissions for Users to Full control, but have not been able to actually make that change. AS is the program behaves like it is in read-only mode.

Les has repeated the reasons for the read only quite often around the internet.
if the program is operating as it should be, ignore it

click change at the top, then cancel on the new window that opens, then disable inheritance. see if you can edit the user perms then... if thats what you're trying to do.

those perms currently look correct for a program files subfolder, but if thats what you want to try...

CORRECTION!

I was just able to change permissions for Users to Full control, but that did not change the behavior of the app - it still won't let me change parameters. I'll try rebooting and see if that helps.

======

Nope, rebooting did not help. Even though Permissions now says Full control it is not possible to make any parameter changes in the program when is it run from C:\Program Files\PrusaSlicer. To get it to work it has to be run from some other directory on the C: drive.

I’d guess the app needs to be run as admin. Regardless of the security settings.

mirror these perms (again) and try
*looks like when you edited the users perms you removed trustedinstaller... not sure why (if disabling inheritance did this, put it back manually)
*yes, i know its 7zip. i just looked at the first program in my program files

it is not possible to make any parameter changes in the program

I had nearly the exact problem with the program “ShareX”
ShareX wouldn’t save any parameters unless it was run as admin.

I ended up creating a task for it to run as admin without UAC prompt and can activate it with a shortcut pointing to the task. However I like it to start with windows.

@Birk You're showing the permissions for the executable (.exe). I doubt the application is having trouble changing that file. Please show the permissions for the folder the folder C:\Program Files\PrusaSlicer.

By default, when you put an application in the root of C:, the Authenticated Users group can modify the contents of the folder. On a standalone PC, that means basically everyone. When you copy a folder to Program Files, the Administrators group has full control of the folder, but users only have read permission. That is likely the discrepancy.

In general...

If you want to run an app from C:\Program Files, you should use the installer if one is provided (as it is in this case).

If you wish to run an app from somewhere else, such as D:\Tools, and want the settings to be in the app's folder, you should use the Portable version.

Using a portable version of an app (when an installer version is available) to run from a protected folder such as C:\Program Files, is asking for trouble. However, in this case, I tested the portable version from C:\Program Files\PrusaSlicer and had no problem setting Configuration > Preferences. I'm not sure if that's where you're seeing an issue, so maybe my test is not valid. Let me know.

Bottom line: Try the installer as I believe @antspants suggested a while back.

OK - here are the permissions for C:\PrusaSlicer:

I did try running it as Administrator, but that didn't help. Later tonight I'll try using the PrusaSlicer installer - but I'm not sure that has the latest version.

Yes, 2.8.1 on the website
2.8.1 in GitHub. However I am not sure why the GitHub page doesn’t seem to offer the installer.

Yes, the installer version is the same as the Git version - and it behaves the same way. (I think this might not be true when the Git version is an upcoming Alpha or Beta version.) When I install it into C:\Program Files it comes up as read-only. But when I install it into C:/XXX/PrusaSlicer it works OK.

Something is definitely not normal. What AV software are you using? Have you tried the software on another computer or VM?

Gee- you think? (Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one.)

Yes, I know - that's why I started this thread.

My only AV software that runs along with Windows is Windows Security. I have several stand-alone one-shot checkers, but those always come up clean.

PrusaSlicer runs fine on my laptop (also Win11.) It runs fine in it's own directory. It only fails to run fine in C:\Program Files.

I don't do VM and don't plan to- way too much hassle for no real gain of function. I had hoped someone here would recognize my problem and know how to fix it. But apparently not.

To quote Ralph Cramden (again): What a revolting development this is.

Well, I think you should try a repair install. It doesn't take long to run and it keeps your apps and data. Really nothing to lose by trying.

Edit: It's possible the problem is specific to your user profile. Have you tested with another local account?
