Update on Windows 11 minimum system requirements

I'm sticking with Intel. I remember when I got into computers in 1998 there was the AMD v Intel CPU wars, but I chose Intel and never looked back. When NVidia bought 3dfx, the choice became NVidia or ATI (AMD), I went with ATI (AMD) and never looked back.

I tend to be brand loyal to products that treat me right. Never an issue in 21+ years of PC building where either AMD (GPU) or Intel (CPU) had me pondering on a switch. That's me.

I'm fickle.

My first homebuilt was a PII (SECC) in 1997. At some point, I switched to a Socket 939 Athlon 64. Later, I went back to Intel Core. At the moment, both of my desktops use Ryzen CPUs. At least one of those should remain until 2023. Intel has some catching up to do, to go to 7nm tech.

I've preferred nVidia GPUs mainly on the strength of their drivers, but my current primary system is AMD. I might have gone with an RTX 3000 card, but the crypto types plus the gamers have given too much demand.

I have not regretted my CPU/GPU/Motherboard choices so far. Unlike some other tech choices, like a Zip 100 drive.

I just thought I have to experience it all. It's hard to talk about one system or the other if you don't have a hands-on experience with it. Good thing we only have 2 choices right now.

I buy the best price / performance with power consumption as an additional factor. AMD Ryzen is clearly superior at the moment.

Wow, haven’t thought about zip drives in long time. I had a gazillion of the Zip disks. Also Orb drives and disks.

Wow is right! I have a small stack of zip disks sitting on the shelf over there. I have an ancient computer in my closet with a zip drive built in. I've been meaning to fire it up one of these days just to see if there's anything on any of those disks worth liberating. Been thinking about it for, oh, 10-15 years

I still have my Iomega USB drive and some leftover disks.

That said, I've no need for it, so I relegated it back to a blackhole in my garage. Only pulled it out cause someone online tried to argue zip drives don't work under Windows 10, that you cant even install the drive. Proved them wrong. I'm also pretty sure Windows 11 will see the drive as well.

I also still have an internal Zip drive, as well as a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive packed in my garage somewhere. Talk about holding on to stuff

I remember wanting to get a Zip 100 drive...then I didn't and they were well, "obsolete." I don't consider something obsolete though if I still can make good use of it; still have two DVD Blu-ray drives in the current build one of which anyway gets used for movies.

On the AMD/Intel choice, I nearly went with an AMD for this build but the AMD I wanted to go with if I went that route was the Ryzen 9 3950X which was twice what I paid for the i7 10700K so I went the "cheap" route for this build keeping in mind that there is better technology on the way and a build perhaps in two years will be the "expensive" one.

The Zip 100 drive was an upgrade, Before that, I had a 20MB Floptical drive. The cartridge for that was the same size as a 3.5" floppy, and cost about $20 at launch. The cartridge price never dropped.

I never bought an LS120 drive, which was a 120MB Floptical technology.

When I retired the Zip 100 cartridges, rather than going to the trouble of overwriting them to eliminate any personal data, I "erased" them with an 8 lb sledge. I suppose that the NSA might have been able to recover some of my data from the trash, but I doubt that most hackers could have managed.

I bought one when they first came out, but in the end they didn't do much for me since I found CD's to be better. Anyway, I still have a bunch of unused (new) zip disks just packed away collecting dust.

And yeah, I still have and use a BD/DVD writer in my backup system. Also use a portable DVD drive on my main system when ripping my music CD's for Plex streaming.

I suspect most people are unaware they existed. I may have seen some in the early 80s. My then employer standardized on a Philips Micom word processing system, which was floppy based. (The printers were daisy wheel types, and had to be kept in enclosures because of the noise.) Later models went to 3.5 inch "stiffies".

The whole system was trashed after the advent of desktop PCs and Macs. A few group offices used Unix boxes for their word processing needs. (That must have been a treat for the typists.) A secretary in my last group there in the early 90s resisted being forced to switch from a DOS version of WordPerfect to a Windows version. Didn't want to have to learn anything new. (But, then again, she was a lousy employee. Played Solitaire on screen a lot during work hours, while resisting doing any work for non-managers.)

I remember those although never used one - was just shown a pile by the neighbor. Best I got to was 5 1/4" floppy - used it for booting DOS 3 or whatever to use Wordstar.

Do remember when I bought my first HD - all of 20MB plus the card and all the flaffing needed just to get that working.

And don't mention the cost even though it was cutting edge at the time. Thought I'd bought some proper real estate!!

All three of us.

I have a SCSI version of the .. uh, Jazz drive, was it? and an external ZipDrive that was parallel port based. Numerous 5.25 drives, 3.5 drives, and the disks that go with them. Not to mention loads of old mobos and CPUs and ram, going back to the 486 days.

I suspect that quite a few of us here in the forums have our own little caches of old / obsolete hardware too.

I used cassette tape backup for very very BASIC (pun intended) programs I wrote as a kid from my TI-99/4A - and many remember the old Reel to Reel data stores in servers of yester-millennium.

So, yeah, I think it does!
