Upgrading from Win 10 to Win 11 questions

@Ghot, following the procedure without the updates yielded the same results, just quicker. So I decided to try it exactly like you did. I downloaded the Win 11 64 ISO from Microsoft, mounted it and went through the whole routine. When you get to 70% done with no restarts you know you're in trouble. Sure enough. I have a feeling Windows 11 does not like my Windows 10, or vice-versa. Maybe 10 is jealous .

Unless you can, at this point I can't think of anything else to do. Do you think Kaspersky paused and inactive but still installed could be a problem? It still shows inactive after the upgrade attempt reboots. I do have a lot of old software installed not used, though nothing I can see that has any booting repercussions. I might try removing those.

I can't thank you enough for your fantastic help and patience.

PS: I should have mentioned the NVME disk has GPT partitions.

@DJG

TPM (PTT for intel), must be enabled in the BIOS.

As for Secure boot, you might have to try it with it enabled, and also with it disabled.
I'm not sure how the Revocations will work with this.

Ofc, you can always do a clean install instead. :(

Just to make sure we haven't missed something... download and run this tool...

I assume you'll get all GREEN boxes like you should.
It should look like this...

GitHub tool Results.png

You should also get the latest chipset driver and the latest BIOS.

Also... even though the motherboard change worked... you should probably install the correct motherboard drivers, too.

Here's your BIOS manual, and your motherboard manual, links (PDF)

@Ghot, WhyNotWin11 showed my Intel I7-14700F CPU incompatible, but checking with the Microsoft website (Microsoft) it shows it as compatible. I had updated the BIOS to latest when I first got the motherboard on 3/18 and downloaded firmware and drivers, but I just checked and on 3/21 they put out a new chipset update, figures  . I'll give it another go with the ISO I downloaded from Microsoft, Win11_23H2_English_x64v2.ISO.

Again, thanks a million.

That tool from Github, may not have the Intel I7-14700F coded in... yet.
If everything else is GREEN, you should be OK.

I Googled this: Windows 11 upgrade error: 0xC1900101 - 0x20017

RESULTS

Also, might want to check your registry for this... it's a Win 11 registry thing... but.. it also applies to Windows 10.

Option #2, step #3, here... will "disable" the Vulnerable Driver Block List, which could also be causing the error.

I had googled that originally :-) . I just now did the vulnerable driver registry option. Let's see if that with the driver update also helps.

Thanks again (and again, and again ...)!

@Ghot, still no joy. Considering I've been upgrading since Win 7 and done a fair amount of settings and registry mods there must be something in there Win 11 does not like. Maybe I'll try dual boot and see if I can get Win 11 up to my needs.

And again, THANK YOU!

- I didn't make the USB, the USB is the Microsoft USB with the resale Win 11 Pro, bought from Newegg.
- X99 MB is no longer, I'm in the new ROG STRIX Z690-F GAMING WIFI. The X99 Win 10 backup worked great on it with no activation necessary, weird.
- I'm on an NVME disk running the BIOS in UEFI mode.
- Kaspersky was disabled.
- I did tell it to do the updates, maybe that was the mistake. I'll try again without them.

The error is due to an outdated dedicated graphics card driver. You usually can't update them so you need to buy a new dedicated graphics card with up to date drivers.

@NormanF you definitely had a point. Both my current cards have no drivers for Windows 11. New card is on the way that does!

Thank you! Let's see how it goes, I paid $10 for delivery tomorrow :-)!

Well, at least I got one less excuse for not being able to upgrade, same error message. But the graphics card won't be a problem now :-). And I got my system spec updated, minus the OS part ...

I was wondering, around what percent completion does the first restart happen?

I honestly don't remember. I did four In-Place upgrades myself, but they were easy and quick.

If you have a fresh backup of Windows 10, why don't you try a clean install of Windows 11.
If Win 11 is too much of a pain, you can always restore the Win 10 backup. ^^

I honestly don't remember. I did four In-Place upgrades myself, but they were easy and quick.

If you have a fresh backup of Windows 10, why don't you try a clean install of Windows 11.
If Win 11 is too much of a pain, you can always restore the Win 10 backup. ^^

Thanks, I was thinking of trying it out and see if I could get my minimal setup going with a clean start. The graphics card at least won't screw that up, and I do have a Win 10 backup from yesterday :-) .

Thanks again to you and @NormanF!

Well, at least I got one less excuse for not being able to upgrade, same error message. But the graphics card won't be a problem now :-). And I got my system spec updated, minus the OS part ...

I was wondering, around what percent completion does the first restart happen?

At 30%. If you've basic memory, expect the process to take 3 hours. If you have like 32 GB RAM, the three boot process can take as little as twenty minutes!

Greetings from a clean install Windows 11, @Ghot and @NormanF! So, I'm full-on on 11, the old big water-cooled hardware has been retired, and I'm pretty much where I wanted except for a few things, biggest being I just discovered Win 11 doesn't like my HP 1320 printer, WTF??!! Microsoft must be getting a percentage of all the stuff Win 11 users had to replace because of planned incompatibility .

Some annoyances are the bloating of apps (I went down the list uninstalling a couple dozen, and there's a bunch I wanted to but not allowed). Anybody know how to make the desktop icon font totally black? The "3D" white/black coloring is very annoying. I do like some of the features, but I guess I'm a minimalist :-)

Thank you both so much for your great help (how do you award user points?).

You mentioned bloating... I used REVO to remove a pile of Windows Apps.
The screen shot below, shows what I removed.
It's just a guide if you want to go all Rambo on the bloatware. :-)

I don't know how to make your Desktop icon font black.

And one of these may help with your Printer issues... (I know it says Windows 10, but Win 11 is really still Windows 10).

@Ghot, I spent over two hours going through similar Google posts with no luck, but going through the printer specs, I realized it had a USB port, though the weird connector kind. Hmmm, I remembered I had in my discarded cable drawer one of those. I disconnected the network cable and plugged in the USB and damn, I had a printer available!

This thread has been resolved! Thanks again to all for your great help, and now to continue getting Win 11 to look like I really want it to :-)

If that printer is Wi-Fi capable, try unplugging the USB cable now, and just see whether the printer works without the cable.

Naaah. So far I've had no use for Wi-Fi, and I have no problem with another USB cable :-).
