USB multiple partitions

Hey guys
I have a SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe with 64GB of storage ( It's actually 57.2GB )
I want to use it to play music in car and I thought it would be good if I separate the music drive and work drive
Bluetooth quality is little bit lower than USB quality

Is there any problem with making it two drives? maybe with different formats?
Should I go with FAT32 for music drive?

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.

No way in the world I'd be mixing both these on a single USB, partitioned or otherwise, no matter how big or what "quality" brand the USB is.

Keep these separate.

Ventoy is able to create multiple partitions on one flash drive.

Why do you think that your car's music player can tell which partition it is supposed to select music from?

I think the first step in your investigation needs to be finding out whether or not your car's music player can cope with there being more than a single drive.
In other words, if there is more than one partition, can it see both or just one or none or can you tell it which to look at?

I think you Car would only read Fat32 file system, so put the music there. Use NTFS for your work. I do agree, though, that it would be risky using the drive that way.
I do use such partitioned flash drives.

The concept of using the same USB device, partitioned or otherwise, for personal files (music or otherwise) and work related files is just too stupid - and dangerous - to even contemplate.

And I trust the use for work intention is only for transfer/temporary transport between devices, and not for storage or backup ???

Off on a tangent...

I never have music in a car when driving. I'd rather hear the sounds the car makes.
It's always nice to "hear" the wheel bearings starting to fail... before the wheel actually falls off, etc. :-)

While I would not use the words "too stupid", I would agree its that's not a good idea.

Perhaps, but are you really going to notice this on a car system?

BTW, I actually stream my music to my car from Plex via from my phone. And since my files are on my NAS, there's no storage taken up by the phone.

Try3 is absolutely right. The ability to support multiple partitions on a USB was added to Windows in Windows 10 version 1703. There is no certainty that the OS used by your car's player would also support them.

Prior to W10 v1703 Windows would only recognise and be able to use the first partition on any USB, you may well find the same issue in your car.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. BTW, I actually stream my music to my car from Plex via from my phone. And since my files are on my NAS, there's no storage taken up by the phone.

Prior to W10 v1703 Windows would only recognise and be able to use the first partition on any USB, you may well find the same issue in your car.

An alternative to partitioning a USB drive is to just create folders (sub-directories) when you want to separate items of different types. The same as we do on an internal HD.
I have my own Music Flash Drive, that I can use in a car, if indeed it has an AUX input.
On that Flash Drive I have five sub-directories for five different performers. Works Great!

For the best chance that the car's player can see at least one of the partitions, you should make the first partition a Fat32 partition and use that one for the files you want the car's player to see. An OS that does not support multiple partitions on a USB will usually be able to see just the first partition.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
