Solved USB3 & 3.1 suddenly gone very slow, tried everything!

Hi Guys,

Desktop PC running Windows 11 23H2.

All of a sudden ALL of my USB3 ports (2 on front, 6 on back) are on a go slow, slower than USB2 speeds. The disks are SSDs, and no matter which port they are in they now run very slow, each disk (4 of them).
Been running fine since I had the machine, a few years ago.
BIOS has been set for many years for USB3 (and not updated for about 6 months) so nothing to do with this since it only started yesterday.
Box checked for better performance in device manager.
Uninstalled all the ports, reinstalled.
All drivers up to date.
All disks checked.

Anything else I should do?

By any chance are the ports into which you are connecting the SSDs USB Type A ports and is there either an adapter or a cable involved that adapts USB-C to Type A? I'll explain why I am asking if that is the case.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

One more question: Did all 4 disks become slow starting at the same point in time or did it start with one disk becoming slow, then later on another becoming slow, etc?

I am not sure there is a definitive answer to that.
Yesterday, my main back up disk started going slow, they I tried the others, and they were so also, but they are used less often.
That said, when first copying they are 400MB/s speed, but after 20 seconds the speed drops to between 50 and 80 MB/s.

This is not going anywhere unless you quote some specs and data.

1. USB A, would normally be USB 3.2 Gen 1.
2. SSD enclosure specs.
3. SSD specs.

What speeds are you seeing, exact numbers ?

The max speed is usually in that order as well from slowest to fastest hardware.

Whatever you connect is limited to the slowest hardware component.

use the Task Manager and look at what is taking up the resources, how much etc...

I don't want to make assumptions, but there are some SSDs that will behave exactly that way and there is not a thing that can be done about it. This happens when the cache is exceeded. This tends to be on el cheapo SSDs.

However, it sounds like you know for a fact that this is abnormal for your drives.

One more thing to try:

Select any drive, right-click, choose properties. Go to the Tools tab, click on Optimize. Select all SSDs, then Optimize all.

Wait a while - I would give it a good 15 minutes to get a fair test. Test those drives again to see if performance is any better.

I would also love to see a benchmark such as CrystalDiskMark run against at least one of these drives.
The disks concerned are in two docking stations, and after changing the Power settings for the USBs in Control Panel, three of the four disks returned to normal, but one still is very slow writing (see screenshots).
The SSD with the problem is a Crucial BX500 2GB, new. I checked it with Crucial Storage Executive and CrystalDiskInfo, and both show it as fine.

Update:

I contacted Crucial Support.
It turns out that this disk does not support copying large files at high speed, yes really an SSD that can't do high speed!
Something to do with the cache.

So I am returning the disk and getting the MX500, which does support copying large files.
