I'm surprised that you are having a problem with malware - these days scams, identity theft, fraud etc are much more of a problem and Windows defender is very robust and secure.
Depending on what you need the VM to do you can make it as secure or as insecure as you like.
If you want it to access the internet and still feel paranoid about security create a proxy server so all internet commands (both inbound and outbound) are routed via your HOST system - then use the Host for screening any payloads containing nasty things.
I haven't found the need for any of that stuff on home networks -- WD is perfectly robust enough for me and I use VM's quite a lot.
