Hello all,

Just trying to find out if I've been bitten by the change from earlier on where some W10 Pro keys won't work with W11 24H2. I bought a W10 Pro key back in 2021 and it's worked fine for everything until 24H2.

Wasn't sure if there is a bug with upgrading or is it time to get a new key.

Thanks....

What’s the error message?
From where did you purchase the Pro key?
Do you use any third party antivirus software &/or VPN which may be affecting activation?

The keys can be managed using the Slmgr.vbs script.
But, it seems that vbs has been excluded from 24H2.

Maybe in an older version of Windows it could be excluded

slmgr /upk
The message ‘Product key successfully deleted’ should appear.

slmgr /cpky
The message that appears should say ‘The product key has been successfully removed from the registry’.

(
# Change Product Key
# Settings > System > Activation
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
)

But I did it for the Retail key.

Hey @abactuon - I ran the commands you listed from an elevated Command Prompt and when I entered the key I got an error box asking me to run the following:

slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004E016

That popped up another error box stating "An Error has Occurred" and it's explanation was:

Code
0xC0040E16

Description:
The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid.

That shouldn't be since it's worked all the way until now. Is there a way I can verify my key somehow?

@Bastet - I purchased it from Keysfan back in Nov 2021. That's why I was asking about if I got bit by the change in product keys from a while back.

Thanks......

EDIT: Just wanted to add that this is a legit MS ISO that I downloaded legally from the Insider Area.

EDIT #2: Went to Activation and my Windows was unactivated (the commands that I ran from Abactuon erased and attempted to change the key). I ran the built-in Troubleshooter and it re-activated as Win 11 Home. I tried again to reenter the key from Keysfan and it was rejected again.

Before I got out of the Win10 Insider Program I found a similar issue when trying to install Win11 over Win10.

Virginia, I know that was just a simple typo (mine happen that way all the time, because I'm a two-finger typist), but it sure gave me pause: I thought, "Holy mackerel! We're talking about personal lawsuits on Eleven Forum now?" :boom: :nope::D

@Taliseian I suspect the key was/is not genuine. If so then while it may have worked for a while it seems the MS servers have blocked the key.

I've not had to try it as I Upgraded to Win11 on 2 unsupported Notebooks from 2014. But I had done the same previously on those 2 computers going from Win7 Home and Win8 Home using unused Pro keys from the old MAPS/Partners program I was in before it was discontinued.

It sucks you bought an invalid key.

Some of the shadier resellers of Microsoft licences are too good to be true.

You cannot upgrade Home to Pro with an OEM Pro product key. You first must disconnect from the internet, upgrade Home to Pro using the generic retail Pro product key. Reconnect to the internet, then activate Pro with your OEM Pro product key.

@NavyLCDR - tried your method and it didn't work. My cdkey was still not accepted, but the Generic key did work.

@kelper - I can't remember but I want to say $20 or so for the key. I think it might of been a Neowin deal (not completely sure).

@Bastet - I went ahead and reformatted and reinstalled 23H2 (22631.3672) and the key was accepted. Now I'm wondering if it was related to Bitlocker being automatically turned on since my initial install was a Clean Install.

As you can see from the response above I've gone back to 23H2 and I'm running Pro using the key I bought, so if the key was blacklisted by MS servers it should not have been activated (at least that's what I think, anyway). My guess is that since it was a clean install, it may have been related to Bitlocker being automatically turn on, but I never checked before reformatting.

I'm marking thread "Solved" but if anyone wants to continue discussions, please feel free.

@Taliseian I can’t see how Bitlocker would affect activation but glad it’s sorted.
