Hi folks
with record temps in Europe for Dec / Jan at least we still have classic Winter weather -- -6 deg and snowing !!!!

We have what's roughly normal today. A bit above 0C with snow.

I have heard about the "January thaw" phenomenon before for the region of the United States that I'm in.

I guess that even for a good chunk of Vermont and New Hampshire, it's not normal for it to be so cold for weeks non-stop.
That did happen in the first quarter of 2015 and in December, 2017, causing us to use oil like we drink water!

December, 2010 was like that, too, then it of course got mild when getting slammed on December 27, 2010 with a snow storm, with 13-inches of wet snow!

In very-late-December, 2010, from the same low, New York City got at least 20-inches of wet snow and there were trash bags piled on sides of streets!

I noticed that it was majorly cold in Europe, during December, 2010 as well!

What's that in "Real Measurements". We were I am, we don't use dubious measurements designed by a polish physicist based on random samples calculated on melting point of a water and salt mix of varied proportions and ignoring the atmospheric pressure in any case where the measurement is taken from (Fahrenheit). Celsius based on freezing point of water of appropriate clarity and boiling point of the same water at same atmospheric pressure is far more reliable. !!!!!

Fahrenheit is usually only expressed these days after converting from deg C, (or even deg K where 0 deg K is absolute zero -- approx - 274 deg C).

I must admit though as a Private pilot one measures altitude still in Feet, although land speed is in knots and stopping speed is still in metres / sec on some smaller air fields !!!!

35F right now, but there's a record-cold daily-maximum temp of less than 10F forecasted for February 4th!

This possibly is the coldest daily-maximum temp since Valentine's Day, 2016!
It was only a maximum in broad daylight of 5F on February 14, 2016.

And the night right before it, may be the coldest night temp, since 2007, 2008 or 2009! (-20F to possibly -30F!)

Record-cold-daily-maximum expected today! Not even 5F at 2 PM! This will be the coldest easily since February 14, 2016!
(Where I saw a maximum of only 5F!)

It shouldn't even surprise me if tomorrow morning, we get the coldest morning since January 21, 2008, IIRC or 2009!

The only colder nights I can remember, was last in 2004! Maybe 2007 as well.

1994 had record cold, too, that probably was the year when I walked into the Vermont Achievement Center school one day and smelled oil, LOL.

My local weather station says there its 66.8º F

Update: -11F at only 8 PM! It possibly will drop to the -30s like in 2004, IIRC.

Just above freezing here at present. Foggy with a slight frost. The high pressure is playing havoc with the Freeview high definition television transmissions (roof aerial).
