When that drive WAS in use, that SMART data is recorded, so to speak, on the hard disk controller.
So months or years later, when you run a program that can read SMART data... the data is still there on the hard disk controller.

The hard disk controllers firmware is where that data is stored. It's in a chip or chips on the hard disk controller's circuit board, not on the disk platters.

So no matter how long that hard drive is NOT being used... as soon as YOU hook it up and check the SMART data... it's still there.

That's how it can light the "Caution" button in post #8.

I'm sorry I can't describe it any better, but it's been a long time since I actually messed with this stuff. ^^
As I mentioned in your other topic (here )... I just buy decent hard drives, these days.

That UK Bipra company you got the drive from only deals in refurbished drives on Amazon, Googled it's Web site, a UK company I have never heard of who claim to be a major supplier.

Looked them up at Companies House, It's a very small company so is genuine but hardly likely to fit their above claims of being a major supplier.
