Where did the old file explorer tree that was in win 10 go in win 11?

It seems it has been changed i don't see my external HDs.

Nothings changed.
In File Explorer go to the toolbar to View/Show
Make sure Navigation Pane is checked to show (ie) the left panel.

If your external HDD isn't showing, Press the Windows key + X and choose Disk Management
In the Lower Pane, is your external drive showing? If it doesn't have a drive letter, right click it and choose Change Drive Letter or Paths and give it a drive letter.

Or does it say the Disk is Not Initialized? or is the file system showing it is all Unallocated Space? this would mean there is a problem with the drive.

That is the first thing i noticed and i sure don't like it, you get used to hunting around for your external drives, what i really dislike is the way your files are saved in MS Word and then trying to find the file.

MS added many un-needed steps to this past simple task.
Getting back to the file explorer changing it was a real stupid thing Microsoft did for Win 11.

Not having any issue with my setup, 2 x 4TB HDDs and 1 x 1TB small portable HDD connected via a self-powered USB 3 Hub connected to a Desktop. Also have a 2TB NAS drive showing in the Navigation pane. The only 'hunting' I have to do is when using Save As to pick where to save.

I’m the same, I have 3 externals and many USB’s plugged in at any one time, they all show on boot and when hotswapping.

I was one of the first to have the first windows on my new Gateway computer many "light" years ago think it was Win 95 might be wrong about the name, everyone else was using DOS and the command line on their systems they told me i would be sorry.

Well they were right the early Windows was a total disaster everything was a fight.

I also a remember young Bill Gates coming to one of our computer group meetings, and explaining how he offered it for sale to IBM but they just wanted t rent it, what a BIG goof IBM made.

Well it's been many more "light years" and many many and many more Ver. of Windows, has it become better in many ways it has, but in many ways it still has a long way to go.

Regardless that there are many of us here, I don’t at all think we are a majority. We search for answers and there are many more than us that don’t. They don’t have to because they don’t need to. They write a document, check their emails and look at cat memes on Facilebook.
They take their computers to a computer store and that keeps computer techs in business. The whole Windows thing is kind of like an eco system.
Then there are the large companies, they employ techs. Small companies outsource it. I don’t think the thousands of members in this particular forum (and others like it) are a concern of Microsofts. Your everyday mom and pop, uni student, office worker, they don’t care, they don’t hold our interests. They’re the ones that will probably happily comply with clicking on a “Buy more OneDrive” link.
And we as users here, those of us who pop in everyday, are in my opinion truly at the core, happy for the challenge.

Well long before the internet we had groups of us young and also older people who wanted to own one of them new computers, but had little if any knowledge of them, enter the computer society of my city hundred's of people flocked to each meeting to here the few who held the knowledge and i mean "held it" tightly, making all us get on our knee's and beg them for answers.
We had many small groups for word processing spread sheets and modems each had a need to find how to use them.

Speaking of early modems i would want a picture on a web site, started a download and about 10 hours later it might arrive on my computer, and if anyone needed the phone it was not right now i am getting a picture.

I remember telling someone a day is coming where we won't need these people with their knowledge, i was told that i was crazy there would always be a computer society and many groups needing help.,

What @snapshot 2022 said, I was one of those who saw the computers coming at work so got one in '92 with MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1 and 'online' was mostly Bulletin Boards with Shareware. Retired 2 years later and a week after that offered a part-time job in a computer store/shop, month later full time and started building computers. I've had computers of each version since then except ME and Vista although I've worked on them. Even had the 'business' computers with Windows NT 3.51, NT 4 and 2000.

We both go back a LOOOOOOOOOG time in this crazy computer thing, before i got smart i took advice from a work mate and bought an Apple II what a mistake when there was no software or any programs to run on it.

Next came the Gateway there first build of computers think in ran on an Intel 486, it really got me into using a computer and programs, it even came with a full Microsoft Office Disk year 1997 and i have been able to install it all the way from XT to Windows 10 that my trusty old ASUS G73SW is running ontoday.
I recall when looking for drivers on ASSUS Web pagei could not find any for using with Win 10, called ASSU the Tech. guy told me my computer did not support Win 10, well it's been running on it ever since and Windows keeps updating it.

I have bought a new computer an MSI Stealth 16, it's a back up for the ASSUS if needed.

Hate it when folks throw away working computers that are out of date, just was given one with 2.16GHz CPU and 2GB RAM [2 x 1GB modules]. It had Vista but I had a 2GB RAM in my parts cabinet so changed one to get 3GB then put Linux Mint on it, works quite well and enough included programs to be useful. Several months ago I was given computers for parts but rehabbed them instead, HP Desktop Win10 Home upgraded to Win11 and an HP Notebook Win10 Home upgraded to Win11. The biggest problem was the Notebook that had a red line across the top when booted into Windows then would have screened blanking out then coming back, fixed by wiping the NVMe drive then a clean install.

I was debt collecting in the early 80’s and this shop owner didn’t have the cash needed to appease my interest. So he gave me a box and screen. So long ago I can’t remember what it was. I also can’t remember if it was DOS 1.1 or 2.1 I spent hours of time with in total enjoyment, trying to get it to load the OS & games faster. An instant love affair. Didn’t last long though.
Earlier than that, I think just before the 80’s I was given a Commodore PAT? I think it was called, that I had no idea about. I probably turned it on once, didn’t know what to do with it and gave it away from memory.

My 24 year old Paint Shop Pro 7 that have been installing on all my systems from Win XT to 11, and it has always worked never a "Program will not run on this computer" message.

This program won't allow my really small 3 Mb picture says it's too large, been through this over bearing AI moderating before. Arrrrrrrrrr

"24 year old Paint Shop Pro 7" puts it back in the days of Win95 or Win98/Win98SE. As I recall older photo programs did have issues with large files at the time, as digital cameras got better the programs had to be updated/upgraded to keep pace with the larger file sizes. A .jpg image at 3MB could be 20MB if using the RAW setting. The situation really wasn't the "planned obsolescence" thing but just technology marching on.

I was meaning this over moderating program not allowing my picture of the DVD disk 3 Mb, telling me file is to large, i have posted many files of15 Mb on many other sites with no over moderating from their systems AI.
Ok i made my file smaller hope this meets the forum pitcure size rules.
