Are there issues specific to an upgrade from 2H23 to 2H24?

In another forum someone says that 2H24 is a "disaster." I'm torn between using 2H23 (which goes EOL in November) or 2H24 for a new install for my workhorse desktop. Are there really important reasons not to use 2H24? Will those issues be cleared up in the next few months?

Good question with no definitive answer. It depends on who you talk to as to whether they like it or not. Most of us here either have no issues with 24h2 or have worked out the ones we might have encountered. I had to do a clean install on one systemwhen the upgrade failed but since it's been flawless and I like it just fine. I have 2 other systems that upgraded just fine.I believe that with the regulars here, there are more who upgraded successfully than those who had issues.

MS has worked out most of the original problems but there is still a few things on their list of known issues.

I find it's caused by Defender on older systems.

Most problems that I read about were network related in regard to upgrading from 23h2 and it breaking already established connections. My problem was purely tweaks/customizations that got reset. If you’re doing a clean install there shouldn’t be any issues

I have no major issues with my 2021 desktop (so far) other than cosmetic issues, but I have a bog-standard install with no third party system add-ons. My daughter has a bog-standard 2021 Dell laptop that needed rescuing because she couldn't restart or shut down, the result of "Task Host Window" preventing shut down after the last update. But that was easily remedied by running SFC and DISM and turning off "Fast Startup".

24H2 is a work in progress that will be a PITA until 25H2 which will likely be even worse.

I updated to 24H2 as soon as it was released and have no problems with it. It seems to be the ones that have installed third party tweaks that have problems.

I am on 24H2 and I really only have had some silly problems with it. It broke all of my networking and I still can't get it to work right, and I get the odd lock up with no explanation.

Over all I am happy with it, but I plan to do a complete re-install to get rid of all the old AMD crap left over from my upgrade to Intel. I have a sneaking suspicion that some of my problems are due to these remnants.

Other than that, I can't complain.

Not having any issue with Version 24H2 with latest Build on 2 Desktops and 4 Notebooks. I don't use third-party tweaking programs as I have to see what my clients see.

It was a successful upgrade for me, too, and it is running fine; moreover, it resolved several issues I had in 24H1.

I'm sure some of those disaster claims include those who did not put in any or much effort to troubleshoot and just immediately blamed 24H2. As an example, the last app to load on startup for me is Phone Link and, of course, you get to know how long it takes before it appears. For some reason, it--and only it--was taking forever to start; all the other startup apps were fine.

So I went into MSConfig to troubleshoot by disabling certain services and, sure enough, the root cause was a third-party app I had installed and was also part of the startup. It just so happens that this app has caused me other issues in the past so after this latest incident, that was the last straw and I replaced it with another app.

Main reason is you only hear chatter about the negatives. However the negatives don't affect everyone. Imagine the thousands upon thousands of 24H2 users who see no issue?

I've had some minor issues with 24H2, but I think most of those were resolved. I have it on my two compliant systems, an Intel 10th generation and a 12th generation. Sometimes after cumulative updates, running SFC and DISM cleanup takes a little longer than in the past. Other than that, it seems to be working fine.

I'm also running it on one unsupported PC, that I upgraded from Windows 10. With 24H2, I can get at least one more year out of it, where both Windows 10 and 11 23H2 have an EOL in October 2025, where 24H2 is good until October 2026.

My 24H2 upgrade from whatever 23H* version I was on, was clean and went fine. No issues since.
But yeah, I read about the “issues” but have not experienced any.

Installed 24H2 on 3 desktops (Dell, Alienware, Falcon NW), a Dell laptop, and a mini PC a few days ago and aside from needing to do the “Allow insecure logins” to let them all see my NAS units, there were no issues. Like others have said, I suspect that more tweaking you’ve done to your system(s) the more issues you might have.

Many who have had problems with 24H2 seem to be using tweaking programs like Start All Black. I suggest trying 24H2 'as is' before modifying hundreds of system settings! That way you will know if 24H2 runs well on your system. After a week, add your tweaks if you must and then you will know if the tweaks are the real cause of any issues. 90% of all problems reported on this forum seem to be self inflicted.

Every problem I have ever had with a Microsoft OS over many decades has been caused by me. I often got the HAL missing error which, back then, required a complete reinstall. I just lapped it up as each time I learnt something. I could happily troubleshoot all night as a computer always does what you tell it to do, never argues and never cops an attitude!

My build is pretty stock (OOTB - out of the box) and I had zero problems with 24H2. It's the folks with lots of unique-ness-es or mods to their system that bitch about it. People love to put 80 extra apps on their system and wonder why things go wonky.

The easy way is to simply image your disk/ssd and try it. That's how I did it. I find it noticeably faster/more spritely than 23H2.

I used latest Rufus to build my usb stick and kept the default (everything checked but top box). So easy!!! I only use local (non-MS) logon.

For most things I choose to learn the new MS way rather than modify the heck out of it trying to keep it like win 7 (see my sig).
