Wi-Fi signal distance?

I have been downloading mp3 audio books from my library for many years. Recently, they have decided not to offer that mp3 format any longer. Very bewildering. Anyhow, I am able to download them to my Kindle 8 where I can listen to them. I like to listen to the books while on a walk, so I use my Kindle in a shoulder bag - works great. I walk about a .25 mile each way to the mailbox and the signal seems to hold - most of the time-yesterday it worked both ways until I reached my driveway and it stopped. Do not understand why that may have happened. Sometimes it stops at the mailbox and gone for the remaining quarter mile.

I am actually amazed that it can do that at all. Anyway, are there any steps available to strengthen that signal. Should I update the firmware on the router. I use Verizon Fios.
Here are the menus for that connection.wifi.jpg
Anything there that I can alter for a stronger signal? Thanks very much.

IMO that's an exceptional amount of distance. I'm sorry I have no suggestions for you about the signal suddenly falling off. But a work around that might work would be to take your cell phone with you on your walk and tether your Kindle device to it (mobile hotspot). Both Apple and Android have procedures to do it.

I agree - it is an exceptional amount of distance. Sometimes I just go for a bit shorter and it it always works. I'm going out now to the mail and hope it continues to work. I don't have a cell phone - one of the oddballs of life -- Thanks very much for your thoughts

Are you sure it is the Signal strength that is the issue? An Internet connection is not required when reading/listening to your books. To read offline, all you do is download the chosen book to your device, and once they become available on the device, then they are ready to read or listen to.
If you are Syncing your device with the Kindle Cloud Library, then you will need to have an active Internet connection. But, if you switch Syncing off, then you can use your device offline while reading or listening. That way, you could travel as far as you like.

There's the possibility if you have neighbors, their WiFi is close enough to overlap your signal. One way to check is pretending to change WiFi networks on the Kindle, and see if another network appears stronger outside your home.

For this library, an internet connection is required to listen to this book. I do it thru the browser on my Kindle. It's very possible that all of the people in this neighborhood have wifi and that's what is allowing me to walk far from home and back and not lose the signal.

I'll look into the syncing issue. Maybe that's the solution. This is a local library in RI - Kindle Cloud Library ?? Don't know about that.

I just returned home and it worked both ways again. I'm pleased if I get it to work most of the time.
Thanks to all for your thoughts.

Sorry, I was referring to your Kindle account on the Internet. That gives you access to a 'library' of your purchased books. If you access that through the Kindle App, and turn Syncing off, then I think you might do away with wi-fi when listening/reading books.

Hi - These audio books are free -- I do know about the Kindle purchased books but they are ebooks - in my account anyway. Thanks for clarification.
