I am reading I need to have this PopCnts As we all know, the latest version of Windows 11 no longer runs on some old CPUs. The affected CPUs are the ones missing SSE 4.2 instructions, POPCNT in particular.

Yeah thanks for your great insight. I didn't know I had posted it because the connection timed out happen sh*t happens sometimes.

The minimum instruction set requirements for 24H2 have been updated slightly now, it's not just POPCNT that's required but SSE4.2 as well. If you are talking about the 7th gen i7-7700k in your System One then yes, it has SSE4.2.


So does the 11th gen i5-1135G7 in your System Two. In fact, all Core i3/i5/i7 from 1st gen on have SSE4.2.
If you are talking about any other CPU, then you can look it up in the link above.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

win11 24H2 also won't run on old AMD Socket AM3 based CPUs like Phenom II and certain Intel Core 2 Quads (from Penryn/Yorkfield) as well

need at least an AMD FX (bulldozer, piledriver, etc.) or Intel Core-i/Xeon (1st gen from Nehalem or Westmere) series to run 24H2 in which these old CPUs have SSE4.2 & POPCNT support

I am downloading 24H2 right now. I will test it first in a virtual machine before upgrading. I will also clone the SSD of my test laptop (see my 1st system specs) that doesn't support SSE4.2 and do some experiments to see if 24H2 actually demand SSE4.2 or it is another fake requirement that can be bypassed. In worst case my test laptop will be stuck at 23H2 and I will only upgrade my main PC (see my 2nd system specs) that has a 3rd generation Intel Core-i7 that supports SSE4.2 I will post the results in the relevant thread.
