I am a heavy user of the start menu, but altered via OpenShell or StartAllback, so there are options to organize it in folders per kind of app.
That's because the start menu you always can reach having windows opened that cover the shortcuts on the desktop.
If I would like to do such things by the icons on the desktop, I would need a second monitor beside my normal monitor.
Which is not what I like, considering the rather small surface of my working desk.
So you see: each user has his own favors!
