I have all those from a number of years ago. I had an MSDN subscription at the time. Back when the free upgrade from Win 7 was supposedly going to expire on a certain date, a few days before expiration, I quickly used all my 7 licenses to activate Win 10 VMs. Then I kept the UUID from the VMware config so that I could reinstall activated copies at will any time I needed to do so.

You might be interested to know that the keys I used from my old MSDN subscription to install Windows 10 still worked as late as June of this year. I think the majority of the keys were used before to perform a Windows 10 install, but at least one was not, and it worked for Windows 11 without issue.

Previously, I had at most 4 VMs on the old rig, so all those were in my Microsoft account, but I removed them all and started fresh. 2 keys I used were previously used to install Win10 on physical machines, and one was used to initially install Windows 7, which was (much later) upgraded to Windows 10. But one had never been used in any sort of upgrade scenario, and yet activated in my VM without issue (and I'm 95% sure it was a Win11 install, not a Win10 install).

Yeah, those keys still work. It was just that when we were a few days before that offer expired I didn't realize at the time that they would continue to work.

I do it slightly differently. The only difference is that I disconnect any virtual HDs first. Since the HDD is not a part of the equation of the hardware that Windows checks for activation, it makes sense to disconnect the drives first. That way, when you export the VM it's a very tiny export making it super easy to store a bunch of them in practically no space.

@Bree, when you converted VMware VMs to Hyper-V, how did you migrate the VM to Hyper-V? Did you create an image of the Vmware VM using something like Macrium and then restore it to Hyper-V or did you use some other shortcut?

I wasn't from VMware, it was migrating all my Hyper-V VMs from my old host machine to a new one. All bar one exported and imported perfectly, but one gave me real grief. You may remember this thread from a year ago....

I reported my my successful 'MS account fix' in post #14.

But I do use VirtualBox as well. I haven't needed to yet, but if I wanted to move an install from one to the other I would try this. Boot the first VM from a Reflect rescue ISO, make a system image, then boot the other VM from the ISO and restore the image.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.
