Win 10 even on VM can install in < 10 mins and update to W11 is better

Hi folks
I found re-installing W10 even on modest hardware and don't install anything else only takes in some cases less than 7 mins - and then updating to W11 avoids all those problems you might get with the "clean install" from UUPDUMP ISO's etc - a common problem which has as many varied solutions on the Internet as there are stinky varieties of Cheese.

Install clean W10 and then simply upgrade to whatever W11 you want - choose insider or whatever.
Activation shouldn't be a problem either.

Odd, clean installs of 11 are just as fast me and NEVER EVER a problem. Besides, I hate upgrade installations (just my personal preference). But then again, maybe the difference for me is that I don't use UUPDUMP ISOs. In fact, have never once used one.

I've "upgraded" Mac's through various OS's, but I have never done a Windows upgrade. Always started clean.

The specific problem I'm referring to with many people doing a Windows 11 clean install is that wretched problem when you want to access the security dashboard it comes up with a Message "Windows needs a new app... etc"

If you haven't got the problem OK but many have = and on the Internet there are zillions of solutions most of which don't work.

Installing a standard W10 system - no extra stuff and then upgrading to W11 is almost as good as the clean W11 install without the hassle. - If doing on a VM though you can still add TPM and sec boot for W10.

Latest releases of W10 - bog standard clen install on even oldish hardware 3 years old or so can be done in less than 10 mins with decent SSD / nvme. So it doesn't take much extra time than installing W11 directly - and by the time you've trawled the Internet and not found a working solution !!! -- "Case Closed M'lud".

BTW Has anybody on this planet ever got anything even remotely sensible from reddit -- I'm sure even my dogs would have better solutions. !!

Good info. I must admit that I do updates so infrequently, except for insider builds. I may just try it in a VM so I can make a direct comparison with my experience doing clean installs.

I just like clean installations because they're so simple for me. "My thing" is unattended setups and injection of updates into my Windows images. So, when I do a clean, it's completely up to date already with all the latest MS patches. Then, installing apps on top of that takes me no time at all. In fact, I already have 25 editions of Windows 10 and 12 editions of Windows 11 updated with today's patch Tuesday updates

I never had issues with clean installs of Windows 11. In fact, I just did one in a VM. Took less than 10 minutes, and installing Pro, I used the option for a Work or School install, then said Join Domain (or something like that), then entered my local account username and password - all while connected to the internet.

I've always preferred an upgrade over a clean install, particularly when there's a lot of installed software. My System One started life as an OEM Windows 7, took every Windows 10 upgrade, then got migrated to a new machine to be eligible for its Windows 11 upgrade. It has a long and distinguished history....



(note: the dates/names above are the date of the upgrade, and the OS that was being upgraded from)

However, Bree, bear in mind that the OP talked about doing a clean install of Windows 10 first, then upgrading to Windows 11 in order to accomplish a "clean install". In this situation, I say just do the clean install of Windows 11 to begin with and skip the Windows 10 installation first.

Agreed if it installs OK.

The problem I had was even with clean install with W11 I couldn't get into WD security dashboard - message "You need an app from the store to open this link.." and obviously an OS where you can't open or use the security is totally a waste of time. Using W10 was a way round it.All the other suggestions didn't work (apart from install on a different computer !!! - not always practical or even possible.

Incidentally any posts linking Reddit links are totally useless -- Whoever has ever got anything remotely intelligent from that site. I think my dogs typing at the keyboard would have better ones.

Huh - this is long winded way of doing it. Just install W11 direct assuming pc is W11 capable.

Agreed -- my point was that if you hgt the problem of error when trying to access the security dashboard of WD with message "You need to install an app form the store to open ..." etc and the other variously proposed solutions don't work then that was a workable get around giving a relatively clean install. Not ideal "But when needs must ....." Or in other cases if the wretched release won't install for other errors (again assuming OK hardware) then this should also work too.
