Win11 22H2 - search function won't work when first letter is 'm' !?!

Thank you for the recommendation! I'll probably look into that once I do a re-install. In the past I've never really been too bothered by just doing a re-install whenever I've had a problem, but I'm using a lot more programs / games these days (used to be all I needed was Windows and WoW).
Macrium Reflect has save my bacon many times. There used to be a free version 8.0, but that was recently withdrawn. The current Reflect v8.1 is only available to try as a 30 day trial. However if you know the right URL to use you can still download v8.0 Reflect Free direct from Macrium. That one has a perpetual licence.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I was intrigued by your comment about never backing up. I have a family member who doesn't back up either and she says, "what for"? She uses her computer only for social media, online shopping, online banking, email, and playing a few games. She saves nothing on her computer, she only has data in her online apps. She has, according to her, "no data" to save.

I have personal data and files that I like to keep persistantly, but it's all on other drives. I use an OS drive that typically just has the OS and programs installed on it so I can just re-install Windows without losing anything I really want to keep (libraries and such are on other drives as well, I just have to point Windows to them when I re-install). Previously I only really needed Windows and WoW which was easy enough to replace with a re-install. I have more programs / games installed these days, but I have a decent enough internet connection and no data caps so I don't really mind just downloading the games and re-installing them; it helps keep the OS drive clear of stuff I don't really need installed in the first place as I add games / programs back on when the need arises.

Honestly, I kind of intended it to probably be the last desktop I build. My last build was started in 2013 and eventually wound up being a 4770k and a gtx 1080 which I was able to make work until this year (old hardware was tired and started acting up). Given how much parts are starting to cost, it might not be feasible to continue updating like this. I'll re-evaluate in another 10 years, but I don't expect Nvidia, AMD, or Intel to suddenly become benevolent in their pricing. Of course, the whole AM5 motherboard debacle has me kind of wishing I'd bought a different platform but that ship has sailed.
