Win11 24H2 Installed, now no network sharing

I've been fighting this forever...

24H2 Build 26100.3624 Home version.

2 other devices on the LAN, wife's W10 Pro and Router USB drive

ALL devices can be seen with NET VIEW \\device name or IP address.

NET VIEW command on W11 and W10 machines fail:

===========
C:\>net view
System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
============

This sort of makes me think it is a Master Browser problem, but that had be deprecated?

However no problem is sharename is used, I can see all shares:

Net View with it:

=======================
C:\>net view \\irvxps8940
Shared resources at \\irvxps8940

Irv's XPS8940

Share name Type Used as Comment

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C Disk
K Disk
L Disk
MachineKeys Disk
Users Disk
The command completed successfully.
====================

I created icons for the shares using ShareName and I can use these to access the devices as well:

x.webp

Just doesn't make sense to me?

If I use on my W11 PC Windows Explorer set to NETWORK I get this:

x2.webp

It doesn't see my PC but sees the W10 PC. Note that it finds 2 Media Server's, wife's PC and the Router.

Something really broken. I've tried EVERYTHING I can find on the web. Nothing fixes this. I didn't try to install GPEDIT into W11 Home, but did find ways to make the same suggested changes using PowerShell.

I even got a hold of Support for my router thinking since I couldn't see the USB drive maybe it was at fault. They connected to my PC and using WireShark captured TCP/IP packets. Everything pointed to the OS.

Using net view on 24H2 I get the error code

googled the error code got a lot of answers from a lot of sources but none of the ones I did try worked. I'm convinced Microsoft is going to have to fix this.

I was able to get onto my wife's Win10 Pro PC...

Net View produces the same 6118 error...

However, in Windows Explorer, her PC can see BOTH her PC and mine, but NOT the USB drive on the Router:

Capture.webp

So, everything worked fine before 24H2 was put on my PC. Both of us could see a 3 shares. Now, we have different results in Windows Explorer and neither have Net View working, the same 6118 error, but on both, NET VIEW \\SHARENAME works fine.

I really think the root problem was the removal of the MASTER BROWSER

I've searched the tuts here but can't find the tutorial @Brink did for file sharing. In it was a link about 24H2 and SMB 1

SMB1 was on but couldn't get this to show after clicking on network on the left. (Samba already set up on the router).

Snipaste_2025-04-06_22-33-44.webp
Double clicking that ZENWIFI gave the window with the router drive showing which I could then map the drive at last.

Snipaste_2025-04-06_22-38-05.webp

Here's the link in @Brink's tut,

I used PowerShell to disable SMB signing requirement-

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false

then hit enter and Y to accept.
I could then map the drive.

I don't know if this will help, but I think I stumbled onto one of the things that is causing the networking issue.

I have two computers, MAIN and MAIN2 (my backup). Both run Win11 Pro 24H2. Both are recent installs, the MAIN2 was just installed a couple days ago, MAIN about a month ago. MAIN2 can find MAIN and share files no problem. MAIN can see MAIN2 in NETWORK, but when I try to access MAIN2, it can't be found. I also opened a command prompt and it couldn't ping it. However, something caught my eye, and I realized that I was pinging the wrong IP address! MAIN2 was 192.168.86.39, but MAIN thinks it's 192.168.86.47! If I go RUN \\192.168.86.39, SHAZAM, the shares for MAIN2 pop up just fine! My whole problem is the computer names are being resolved to the wrong IP addresses!

I still have a master browser. I have a TP Link AC5400 router with a HDD attached and shared as TP-SHARE. if I run on cmd line nbtstat -a TP-SHARE it shows it as the master on my network. I don't think they could do without a master browser in Windowz.

Sorry, my bad, it is the COMPUTER BROWSER that was Deprecated. See [MS-BRWS]: Overview

Somehow I think this does play into everything???

I think part of the reason is that the Router runs SMB1 for the USB disk, and Samba as the Server. Some routers do use SMB2 though.

Still, I think MS needs to fix this, and it isn't the SMB1 change of needing a P/W, as I've disabled that.

Brink, that is for W10. Slightly different SMB1 options on W11.

I've done all that though, and even turning off SMB1 signing.

Something is wrong, many many similar messages on the web with the 24H2 drop of W11.

@IrvSp I've gotten lost with everyone chiming in... is the issue that you still cannot see the USB drive attached to your router? If so, which router model do you have? If you know the firmware version, that would be helpful also.

By the way, you may want to edit post 121 to remove that email address in the screenshot.

@pseymour,

Thanks, seems it is too late to edit. Was able to look at the code (Inspect) and delete the capture though.

Seems there is a time limit when one can edit, as I can edit this one. Here is the replaced capture if anyone needs to see it in #121:

For what it is worth, I'm way ahead of you. I too thought it was my router, a TP-Link Deco BE65...

See it was unfortunately a compounding of events, MS update to 24H2, and around the same time, TP-Link updated the F/W on the Deco's (3 of them).

Wife complained first that she couldn't save to the USB drive on the Deco main router. Hmm, and I then checked and I couldn't see it. Net View failed... At one point we both got the error code of 53 which is the Path not found... tried all the suggested stuff on the web to fix it. Nothing did, but at least I was able to use the SHARENAME to see/connect to it.

Thinking it WAS the TP-LINK update I contacted Support... and of course they had not seen this problem, but we scheduled a remote connect for late in the night later in the week.

Using Wireshark they captured the TCP/IP packets when issuing the NET VIEW commands. I know enough about TCP/IP packets to view what was being done and understood the packets (we exchanged comments via notepad, no phone connection). It was clear the proper packet went out from the router back to the PC. I was asked if I had another router, and I did, the prior one that I had no problems with before. A TP-Line BE230. Installed it, and it too had the same results and TCP/IP packets. The consensus, it was the OS, 24H2. Agent did also check that I had the settings correct and the SMB1 signing off.

Somewhere later, my wife's W10 PC could see her PC and mine in Windows Explorer, and this was after an MS Update (I check on every MS Update now), but we both are now getting the 6118 Net View Error.

Oddly enough, my iPAD using VLC can access the USB drive, sees it and all the folders on the drive, and I can open the share and run a video. I used to rip the DVD's I purchased and store them on that USB drive so one of the SMART TV's without a DVD player can view the DVD. Also have Pictures on the USB drive and I can see them on the Smart TV's as well. So non-MS OS's have no problems with the router drive accessing it. I don't have a problem either if on the PC's I use NET USE to assign a drive letter to it. About the only reliable way to get around the OS problem right now?

Uh, okay. I didn't think it was your router or not your router. I was asking what the current issue is ("is the issue that you still cannot see the USB drive attached to your router").

@pseymour,

I forgot about my 'old' post on TP-Links forum, You can see it here. Started in Oct., and initially was due to the new F/W, and then 24H2 installed and that problem changed. Even now, not using IPv6 no longer works.

During the remote connect with TP-Link, the older F/W was installed too, and it did not help.

I'm at a loss here... but at least I have alternate ways to access the shares.

I've searched the tuts here but can't find the tutorial @Brink did for file sharing. In it was a link about 24H2 and SMB 1

SMB1 was on but couldn't get this to show after clicking on network on the left. (Samba already set up on the router).

Double clicking that ZENWIFI gave the window with the router drive showing which I could then map the drive at last.

Here's the link in @Brink's tut,

I used PowerShell to disable SMB signing requirement-

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false

then hit enter and Y to accept.
I could then map the drive.
Fabler2, would it be possible that you kindly advise how to complete the above step. I copied the setting via the command prompt but did not work. Regretfully I have limited knowledge of cli commends etc. Did all changes in win11pro my Zidoo Mediaplayer is accesible but I would like
to see the Zidoo Icon in my network environment. (as per you 125 layout) Thanking you kindly in advance.

Use the PowerShell command as Admin not CMD.

First of all thanks very much for your prompt reply, highly appreciated.
Just completed the command via the powershell as admin, had indeed used cli.
Restarted win11pro normally the zidoo mediasplayer icon would appear in the Network environment.
But since 24h2 with the added security restrictions it's no longer there.

I really like your layout on item 125

I'm not familiar with your media player but the setting I used is for a USB connected drive to the router .

After running the command the drive didn't show under This PC even though set up in the router.
Expanding Network on the left I could then double click zenwifi router icon (the connected drive (backup)) to be able to map the drive.

The mediaplayer is connected via a cabled network, after I made a separate network connection in win11pro (\\Share_Samba\Share) I was able to transfer data from my Pc to the Mediaplayer.
But since the release of 24H2 I have been trying to get it appear automatically as in 23h2 but sofar in vain, it not a big deal, but I just liked in the old way.

Tks. again for your help.
