Solved Win11 cannot see hdd attached to router

I've successfully upgraded my 9 yr old Win10 PC from W10 to W11 using the setupprep method but inexplicably it cannot see the storage HDD attached to my BT Hub (as USB1). My Win11 laptop sees the drive fine, as did Win10 before the upgrade. I have turned on SMB 1.0 File sharing support but any attempt to access this drive in Explorer just results in a 403. I'm completely stumped.

If the share is appearing as USB1, then you probably have a BT Hub4 (or earlier). When I had one of those, I had to have the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client enabled on all my W10/W11 PCs, also they had to be in the HOME workgroup as that was the hard-coded workgroup the router used. Now that I have a Hub6 this one no longer appears in any workgroup, to browse it in File Explorer I now need to address it by IP as \\192.168.1.254.

I still need SMB 1.0 though, but one improvement is that the share name will be the same as the drive's own partition name (in my case that is \\192.168.1.254\Toshiba 2TB). It no longer assigns the generic USB1. Have you spotted yet that if you remove the USB and plug in another one it will be shared as USB2? Plug the original one back in and it will retain its USB1 label. Your router will remember each USB you plug in and always assign it the same USBn share name.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

I’m unfamiliar with the mentioned BT Hub, I enabled FTP on HUAWEI ONT – working fine

It's an ISP provided router supplied here in the UK by BT Internet. As with most ISP's routers, there's little you can configure on it.
