Window 11 resolution changes

Hi,

every few weeks/months, intermittingly, in my Windows settings, display, etc... The recommended resolution changes of it's own accord. Sometimes it recommends 4096X2160... then other times it recommends 3840X 2160.

Normally when it recommends 3840X 2160, (and I selected it) it will crop the sides of my screen.... but when it recommends 4096X2160, but I choose 3840X 2160 it doesn't crop the screen edge.

Why is the recommended resolution changing, without me knowingly changing anything... What's going on here.

Are the graphics drivers up to date?

What is your monitor? What interface are you using (HDMI? DP?)

Is the monitor identified is Device Manager?

I seldom see that on Win7, Win10 or Win11 computers but will on a Linux machine. The Linux machine will display as 1024 x 768 during boot but changes to 1920 x 1080 when drivers are loaded. 24" monitor on a KVM for the 4 machines.

Windows Update tries to update your graphics drivers and then set the monitor to the standard 4K resolution of 3840x2160. The higher resolution 4096x2160 native to your monitor is not selected because it is non-standard, but you can select it afterwards. To make sure Windows Update won't try to mess with your graphics drivers again, you have to manually download the latest official drivers directly from AMD and install them. In AMD Control Panel, there is an option to automatically update the drivers or at least notify you. All you have to do it update ASAP so Windows Update won't try to replace the official drivers and won't change the resolution again.

I will try this suggestion first... thanks.

It makes most sense to what I've been seeing the last year or 2. Things changing on your setup without you doing something is always a sign something is wrong.

I've updated everything... but still, the recommended resolution is 3840x2160... and the side are still cropped at the sides of screen when I choose 3840x2160. Is there something else I need to do to get it to "activate"?

At the moment it's my "HMDI Splitter"... before the change it was my "Google TV".

I've never used a TV as a monitor. But UHD resolution is 3840 X 2160.

If it was a regular PC monitor, I'd suggest getting the monitor's "drivers". (Which aren't really drivers. The main thing is getting an .inf file that identifies the monitor to Windows.)

Maybe the handshaking isn't great, if you're using an HDMI splitter.

Actually the splitter isn't working at the moment, and I'm thinking if this AMD driver not being updated/and Windows changing it, that is the cause.

I trying to get Windows to read the display as my Google TV rather than the HMDI Splitter. (From memory that what my display was before the resolution change).

If 4096x2160 is not listed, you may have to add it as custom resolution. However, a Google search for your monitor specs suggests it's native resolution is 3840x2160 and it might not support 4096x2160 properly. In most TVs you can stretch the image by changing the aspect ratio from the menu,

Verify that the TV is hooked up through one of its HDMI 2.1 ports with a HDMI cable connection that can properly support HDMI version 2.1.

To reset the HDMI connection, be sure that both ends of the HDMI cable are physically unplugged before plugging either end of the cable back in. Resetting the HDMI connection in this manner could make the problem go away, as doing this will force the graphics card in your PC to re-detect the TV's hardware capabilities over HDMI.

Before any problems, "Display 1 HMDI Splitter" always read, "Google TV".... and "Generic Monitor HMDI Splitter" always read "Google TV".

How do I change it back to "Google TV"... as I fear this may be the cause of my splitter not working correctly... (At the very least, I can rule it out as a problem).
