...it's 'permissions'. Instead of typing the full address, work your way down opening each folder in turn in File Explorer, giving yourself permissions as you drill down.

Or do as I did in post #218 and run TreeSizeFree as an administrator, that will have permission to see inside any restricted folder.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I was curious what mines would show now so I started from C:\Windows\System32 but I cannot even open config as double clicking on config doesn't have any response.

Do you have Hyper-V installed? I'll be willing to bet that you do.

I only get that prompt to gain permanent access to a folder on a machine without Hyper-V. If you have installed Hyper-V even your installed Windows is virtualised, just another VM running above the Hypervisor. That seems to have a few unexpected consequences, such as this one.

Yes but I fixed the problem, basically:
I had it to change Hidden files and folders to "Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives",
checked the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
then apply

then after that
change Hidden files and folders to show,to Show hidden files, folders, or drives",
unchecked the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
then apply

and then I got the prompt and back in business:

same problem with systemprofile but the same method did not work. What's strange is I had Hyper-V installed even the first time this thread was first available and it worked fine. Got it working by adding myself to the Security of the folder.

IIRC the root folder contents is part of the file system structure whereas subfolders are stored as files. Right clicking on either does not show the overhead, just the total size of contained files. With NTFS there are MFTs that have information about files. I have forgotten how they are organized but there are search engines that only work with NTFS file system because they search the MFTs rather than indexing the disk volume. Very fast. But my point is giving the size of the outside of the measuring cup would only confuse the issue. Unless you are doing disk partition and file system manipulation you only care about the size of files. But of course the subfolders store the info someplace. It just makes it non-obvious how much overhead is involved.

Well after the Task Scheduler tweak, I only had 352 of them this time.
When I made this topic... I had 2200 of them. So I guess that's an improvement. LOL

Never had any to begin with thankfully so no task scheduling and setup required. None as of today either:)

Microsoft > Windows > Management > Provisioning ...and the top two items were re-enabled.
So I just disabled them again. :-)

I just checked my system and the first two LOGON and CELLULAR show the STATUS of "READY". However the Cellular one says the last time it was run was 11/30/1999 and the Logon shows it was last run today (11/17/24). So may I ask, should I set both of them to DISABLED and is it okay to delete the (200+) tw-4ff4-30f4-48dcc2.tmp empty folders I have in the C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\ directory? I don't like this behavior.:(

I think it's suggested to disable the Logon task, but I have all those Provisioning tasks disabled.
When I looked, Cellular and Logon were enabled, so I've disabled them again.

I had 2,650 empty folders. I deleted as many as possible using the utility Remove Empty Folders (RED) and also my antivirus, Webroot. I have 804 that won't delete. I saved just 108 MB. Most of the remainers are in WinSxS, Program Files, ProgramData, System32 and AppData.
So it was hardly worth the effort!
