Windows 11 24H2 26100.1 install on non-complaint VM - it worked!


Just a quick update on my original post

A ran the 24H2 VM yesterday and checked for updates. It updated to 26120.461 without any problems.

I noticed before I updated that the security wasn't working - not sure if that was because I used a hybrid ISO or if there was a problem with the UUP.
The Security icon wouldn't show in the system tray and trying to access the security page through Settings caused Settings to crash.

I did 'cloud reset' to test it - worked without problems, security is working again now and 26120.461 is running - the cloud reset must download the latest available version

The requirements were raised slightly recently. Now you require SSE4.2 on an AMD CPU too, SSE4a is no longer sufficient.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Anyway, I am sure IF there is a workaround it will be posted in this forum and most likely future versions of Rufus will include it.

If Rufus can remove the requirement for most of MS's BS, then I'm pretty sure (hoping anyway) that X-Lite or some other software group will find a way to bypass the SSE4.2 requirement, so that 24H2 can boot up and run on older CPU's.

Right now, there are millions of hard working PC's, world wide, that cannot run 24H2. That's discrimination, at its worse.

I just downloaded and installed 24H2, V2 (from X-Lite) on a new Crucial 500GB SSD, not on this system, but on her twin, and BOY is that OS ever running FAST! Probably the fastest OS I've ever installed, since DOS 6.22.

Any Windows version can be made very fast if you switch off or disable the stuff that slows it down. Disable all transparency, fades, animations everywhere. This will make the graphics much faster and also speed up Windows a little. Next step is to disable all useless startup applications such as Google Updater, Java Updater, (all updaters), Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, (all browsers), Skype, Zoom and any other application that you never need at startup. You can always manually load the applications by double-clicking the shortcut icon. If you disable 80% or more startup applications you can except at least 40% increase in performance. A little more advanced step is to also disable all useless Services or at least set them to manual instead of automatic execution. I cannot suggest anything, this is only for expert users, if you don't know what are you doing leave it as it is.

This is the reason why Linux SEEMS faster (isn't actually) than Windows on the same computer. Because it has zero visual effects and almost no startup applications.

I've installed it on unsupported hardware. No issues on reboot.

To install from iso you need to install Aveyo's Skip_TPM_Check_on_Dynamic_Update check bypass first and then run the Windows 11 installer. You are going to be told, absent that patch, its incompatible with your PC.

In any case the CPU supports SSE4.2 and PopCnt. An older CPU would fail. You not only have to bypass the general hardware compatibility check, you have to bypass the PopCnt instruction requirement. Not yet possible.
