Insider Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25393.1 (23H2) - June 14

Actually the latest builds seem to be more stable and efficient than the previous things -- I;ve no problem with testing these things in a VM -- if you want 100% stable stuff don't join the insider program or use insider builds via UUPDUMP etc.

I suspect there's too many people on these forums attempting to use these builds as their "Everday" machine which really isn;t what they are intended for. I'd always recommend for this stuff using a VM or at least dual booting via vhdx files.

Anyway seems to be installing OK. Just install as a VM and leave running in the background so you don't have to spend any time on locking up machine on installing it. Why people would put these builds on to their only machine not as a VM is beyond me as these are TEST builds. People griping about these builds costing them time on their main machine shouldn't IMHO be using them.

Installed on two computers. No issues with installation. Will see what the program build has to offer!

I run them on separate NVMe SSD as dual BOOT. Just as stable as normal builds. Actually pretty boring.

They do seem pretty stable now -- Time perhaps for Windows 12 !!!

Note for those still using SMB1. This build seems to prevent you from adding it via "Programs and features" -- but it can be added manually via elevated command.

I filched this from the W10 Forum -- still OK on W11 -- for some reason the power shell command wasn't working but this method did.

(I know using SMB1 has all sorts of security implications but this is a HOME network and I've loads of old legacy boxes etc that still need SMB1).

And the windows build

Same sort of procedure if you need Net 3.0 etc.

Note also telnet has to be installed (if you use it) via "add optional features". It used to be in the add windows features in the control panel (programs and features).

Back in the day, items got added to Fast Ring (became Dev), and eventually the Fast Ring version was released on Slow Ring (became Beta). As you got nearer Release date they all converged.

Now you have to think of it as:

Canary - early sight of new ideas that may never see the light of day in release (This is rather like the old Skipahead).
Dev early sight of features that will probably make it to release but no guarantee.
Beta early sight of features that are likely to make it to release but no guarantee.

What is irritating is when new features hit Beta before Dev!

Back in the day, it was simple - Fast Ring users saw all new features first and higher risk of being buggy.
Slow Ring users saw the SAME features a bit later when initial bugs had be ironed out.

In general, all features in Slow Ring got into release except notably the infamous Sets feature which was a heap of camel dung apart from the long awaited File Explorer with tabs (which we have now as an indendent feature).

So users generally opted for either the Fast Ring if a bit cavalier, or the Slow Ring if more conservative.

Now Insiders have to run both Beta and Dev if they want to see all features which is more effort and confusing.

Personally, I am not really interested in testing features unless they have a decent chance of making it to release.

Frankly, the Insider Programme is a mess now.

I totally agree and I'm not sure I'll stay in Canary much longer if things don't change .

I need SMB 1.0/CIFS Client to access a usb HDD being shared out by my router. I had it turned on before this build and it is still on now. Note: you only need SMB 1.0 CIFS Server if you want a legacy device to be able to access shares on this Win11 PC. All I need is to access legacy shares from Win11 so I leave the Server turned off.

I think those security risks are mainly in the SMB1 Server, another reason I don't turn it on.

I don't need .Net 3.0, so I've never turned it on. I've just tested that in this build and could still turn it on in Windows Features.

@Bree , interesting that you say " I need SMB 1.0/CIFS Client to access a USB HDD being shared out by my router." I've an SSD connected to my Archer (TP-Link) router via USB on the router and don't have that setting enabled. Sometimes it will need disconnecting/ connecting again, though, as if Windows forgets the settings every now and again.

I don't need .Net 3.0, so I've never turned it on. I've just tested that in this build and could still turn it on in Windows Features.

It seems to be the same build so perhaps the iso I made (via UUPDUMP) isn't OK.

Will see soon after the "update" updates !!!!

Most of the newer TP-Link routers support SMB 2, if so you wouldn't need SMB 1. My router is the ISP-supplied one and only has SMB 1 so I do need it.

That's quite likely, mine had its update through Windows Update.

The latest firmware for it allowed for SMBv2 and that was many years ago. Thanks.

Ever since they pushed out first W11 build, all build channels has been equally crap and stable/unstable (cup half full and half empty at the same time depending on how you look at it). This incudes W11 GA and Win10 too. I dont know what's going on with Windows, but it's getting worse and slower (less responsive in certain tasks) for each day that passes.

I see this at home and even at work with brand spanking new computers.

Not sure why I even bother with IP anymore...
