Maybe MS were just 'testing' for RP rollout - or they sent it out by mistake and a few lucky (?) users were in the right place at the right time

If you really want it, you can change your Insider level to Beta and let it install + the CU. Afterwards you can change back to RP. I believe this is the cross over point when Beta users can revert to RP.

I have an explanation from Microsoft -

Thank you for the feedback link.
Did some research and it does show that your device was flipped from RP to Beta for ~2 hours. As luck would have it, the device scanned for updates during that time window and was offered the .2271 build.
If you'd like to keep that device on Release Preview, I'd recommend uninstalling the .2271 LCU.

If you wanted to stay on this Beta build and remain on the RP channel, then you don't need to do anything since you are already have the RP channel selected. Once the RP builds catch up, you'll start getting new RP builds again.

If you wanted to switch to the Beta channel, then you can, and will start getting new Beta builds when available.

Now that could explain the problem with the wife's PC 4 weeks ago when hers got unexpectedly flipped to Beta and got it installed. Seems to have happened because the logon to her MS account failed, and then Windows Insider simply defaulted to Beta. And about 6 months ago her PC was also suddenly updated to Dev, but I was able to recover that using a Macrium restore.
