Have just watched a video on this Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC and as I have never heard of it am curious as to what others feel about it if and when they have tried it. It looks rather good at first glance but I am also wondering what I can and cannot do with this OS either on new or older machines.

Though it says it can be tried for free, the OS does have to be activated after trial period ends. Therefore you would have to have a license to activate it.
This is per MS:"
  • If you decide that you want to install Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC using one of the provided ISO files, you won't be able to uninstall it. In addition, after you install Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC Evaluation, you won't be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows. A clean installation of your former operating system will be required, and you will need to re-install all your programs and data.
  • If you fail to activate this evaluation after installation, or if your evaluation period expires, the desktop background will turn black, you will see a persistent desktop notification indicating that the system is not genuine, and the PC will shut down every hour.
Enterprise is a volume license version of Windows used by large companies and organizations, as a private individual you cannot purchase the Enterprise edition,

I would like to correct a misconception. Individuals can purchase a license for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC if they can prove they are an IT professional, device maker or software developer. They don't necessarily have to work for a large company or organization.

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC is intended to facilitate IT professionals, device makers and software developers in the evaluation of Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC for use in building or deploying long-lifecycle, fixed-function, specialized Windows devices in their environment.

If you are a device maker looking to buy licenses for your devices, please contact one of our Authorized Windows IoT Distributors for assistance.

They'll offer volume licences on eBay for small businesses for up to 15 PCs. That should be more than sufficient in a home or small business setting.

If you're a large corporation or a government agency, you can acquire a large volume licence through Microsoft.

It has a lot of the bloatware removed (because it is an IoT edition). Other than that nothing special about it for the home user. And all the bloatware removed from it can be removed from a Pro in about 5 minutes anyway.

I saw the same video too and was very interested to hear that it can be installed on my old laptop that does not have TPM or a qualifying CPU. Maybe Microsoft will cave and allow the millions of Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 without sending their perfectly good PC to the dump.

I will give it a try on my laptop after I replace the drive of course.

Is there a way to "upgrade" from Win11 Enterprise 23H2 to Win11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 24H2 and keep personal files and apps?

I just tried to upgrade by running the exe, as if I was performing an in-place upgrade/re-install, but the personal files and apps option is grayed out.

So here's how I did it:

Use regedit and modify this key:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

  1. Change these two values to match what's depicted in this image:
    1720289379189.png
  2. Mount the Win11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 24H2 ISO and run the exe.
