Although there's plenty of historic posts about Windows 11 putting a stop to users continuing to use software device drivers, I cannot find anything that would hint at or walk me though adding my old Roland / Edirol UMC-3EX driver into the "compatible listing / family / category".

I recently build a new PC around an AMD ryzen 9700 with a x870e motherboard and Windows 11. Aside from a large number of bear-traps, the killer was finding out I had to disable a new feature in Security / Core Isolation / Memory Integrity. Allegedly with Memory Integrity disable, my PC is potentially vulnerable (even though my predecessor PC running Win 10 had the same vulnerability by default).

I got the Roland Edriol UM-3EX Midi interface installed and working with Cakewalk, planning on digging out my ancient stuff to make music again. The itch at the back of my mind is that plenty of others have found this out before me and have found a solution to using old "Incompatible" device drivers in Windows 11 and utilizing all of Windows 11 Security features, so why not ask.

Has anyone found a tool / tweak / app that can either fool Windows into seeing an old driver as one that is "compatible" in the Windows 11 compaibility list, OR something along the same lines but makes Windows 11 happy to allow me to turn Memory Integrity back on?

Thanx

Welcome to the forum, slartibard. You have asked an excellent question and I wish I could say that there is software available for this but to the best of my knowledge there's nothing available. (Not that I haven't looked.) Windows 11 also makes many standard widely used drivers supported in Windows 10 both on the Intel and AMD side of the fence inoperable until which time the core isolation/Memory Integrity is turned off. I find this especially frustrating and there should be no reason for it on Windows 11 "ready" platforms. If the system passed the Windows 11 compatibility test then Microsoft should deal with the matter instead of sweeping it under the rug as they evidently have done. What I'm saying is that your issue doesn't only apply to older drivers, but also to current drivers and hardware still being supported and reported as Windows 11 compliant.

The Consortium that deals with this is associated with the same groups that insisted on making TPM2 an integral part of the Windows 11 OS consequently rendering the majority of computers using Windows 10 at the time obsolete and non-compliant. So Microsoft, AMD, and Intel are all to be blamed for dropping the ball. Meanwhile TPM2 is still getting hacked, systems are still getting hijacked, ransomware is still a thing and apart from forcing people to buy new hardware this move has accomplished precious little.

I find it interesting that Intel, for example, can get Microsoft to include microcode in a Windows Update to hobble CPUs that were known to give great performance at affordable prices, but fail to do likewise regarding this Memory Integrity feature. Evidently, there just isn't enough incentive for them to do it.

Thanx for your thoughts Scannerman, I hope something shakes loose as a result of my post. Perhaps with hindsight, I should have trashed all of my previous midi interface hardware and shelled out for something new but that opens a can of worms as there's an ocean of hardware out there, especially via Amazon, that doesn't provide the same spec. Your thoughts on the big player politics makes me wonder where its all going, maybe Ubuntu is a possibility but thats way off in the future. Gunna have to stick with what I've got for now..

I feel you. Thousands of others likely feel the same. Linux seems to be about the only glimmer of hope we have left in this respect and frankly, I don't like where the bleeding edge stuff is going. In fact, I just recently communicated to a contemporary that it seems Richard Stallman was right about a few things after all. I can't help but to envision a picture of old men sitting around a table, nodding and agreeing with one another after hearing the old adage, "They don't make 'em like they used to". Yeah, it's a trope. Nonetheless while these old dino bones still keep moving enough to type on a keyboard I'll not tire of reminding younger men that newer isn't always better. There's much to be said for things vintage and it seems a shame that so much is often sacrificed in the name of alleged "progress".
