Windows 11 Pro
I notice this show up as an update after I did a windows 11 pro update not long ago. Is this necessary and what does it do? Are there any bugs? I tend to want to delay an update for as long as possible before I have to do an update.

Updates like this as long as it isn't a Dell BIOS Firmware update is always fine to do without turning off bitlocker right? Have a Dell XPS laptop with windows 11 pro.

So is it fine to just not update it until it's necessary?

I'm still on 23H2 Beta and won't be updating to 24H2 until most bugs are fixed. Thus, to answer your Q: There is no need to update right now. I would wait, but this is just my two cents...

@newmann, I too have a Dell XPS. (see "My Computer" below) I run Dell Command | Update and Windows Update every day. Most updates have a number of security fixes and this one had several, including some zero day threats. I'm a firm believer in doing updates when they're released for my PC. I've been running 24H2 since it was released for my XPS, and its been solid here. That's what I do, you do what you like.

A few days ago I was offered 24H2. I ignored it, and it sat in optional downloads. Tonight I come to find that they've pulled the old switcheroo on me and took the offer back.

Jokes on them. I didn't want it in the first place.
The notification said it would be available to me soon.

The 24H2 update turned up in my update area on December 5. I installed it, along with an update (KB5048667) on December 12. I haven't found any issues with 24H2 except that the calendar had regular numbers and Chinese numbers. I never had that setting. But that was quick to fix, so no problem.

So I had delayed windows updates for 2 or 3 weeks several times. I leave my computer on 24/7 and put it on lock when not using it. Is that bad? Or should you always turn off your laptop overnight? I use to turn it off every night but then stopped doing that because I heard shutting down the computer isn't good? It's better to put it on hibernate overnight? However, all I do is lock it so is that bad?

So it happened again a few times when the next morning I noticed my 2 external monitors were off and so was my laptop screen. Once I believe it was due to a short power outage that I wasn't aware of so when I powered on my xps 15 9520, it then turned on and had low battery. The 2 external monitors turned back on. Then once when I delayed the windows updates for 2 or 3 weeks, I then forgot that it was the next day where a windows update was going to happen. So I powered on laptop as it was off and then it did the Dell Firmware BIOS update. After it did that, then my laptop was fine to log in. I use bitlocker so bitlocker pin and then windows 11 pro password. Last time I mentioned how there was a Dell Firmware BIOS update the next morning and when it did it, I had that blue screen of recovery where I had to enter my bitlocker recovery code to get back in. Several posters mention how you always turn off bitlocker before a BIOS update but I never knew about that.

So far I probably had a total of more or less than 20 Dell Firmware BIOS update since I had my xps 15 9520. I never knew you were supposed to suspend bitlocker. So that one time where it did the firmware update the next day when I had my computer on all night, I had that issue of that bitlocker recovery blue screen and to enter the recovery code but that did work. Does everyone here suspend bitlocker when doing a firmware update? I believe Brink mentioned that isn't necessary because your computer would let the BIOS update know it uses bitlocker?

It does show you're up to date on windows updates. However, it still has that Windws 11, version 24H2 is available message.

Should I download and install or just ignore it? I had this message for quite some time already. Will it eventually manually update it after a certain amount of time?

Related to this. My Dell XPS 15 9520 has 2 video cards.

The Intel Iris XE Graphics and the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050.

Is there a way to know if both of these are updated fully? Or it has to be if you done the latest windows update? The reason I ask this is because many times after a windows update, my main monitor for some reason doesn't work. Then I would download this Intel Arc driver from Intel website that is compatible with my XPS 15 9520 and that fixed the issue. I remember doing this a long time ago and whenever a windows update make my main external monitor not work... downloading the updated Intel Arc driver fixes this issue. My 2nd external monitor for some reason never has an issue.

The other thing is I recall I went to task manager a while back and you could check what version of the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050 you are using? A while back I recall it was using a very old version, like the version when I go this laptop years ago. I am not sure about the Intel Iris XE Graphics if that is fully updated or not. How do I check this?

I ask this because my laptop by default uses the Intel Iris XE Graphics as default. However, certain programs that I use on my laptop, it uses the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050 so I want to know if I'm using the updated version of it? So say I been using a very old version of the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050 on my laptop, would that mean that the program that I use which uses this video card as opposed to the Intel Iris XE make the program go much slower? I never wanted to manually update the Nvidia 3050 because it might mess it up somehow even though I might be using a real old version of it?

I don't use any hacks or run any apps to make Windows 11 look or act like previous Windows versions.

TraderGary, which Dell XPS do you have again? I have the XPS 15 9520 and I recalled you posted a while back you had a similar one, either the version before or after mine?

What are the specs of your laptop?

Mine are

1920x1200 Screen
Windows 11 Pro
i7-12700h
32gb ram
1tb ssd
Intel Iris XE graphics
Nvidia Geforce GTX 3050
86wh Battery

So whenever there is a windows update showing on the bottom right, you always update it right? Or do it the next day at the latest?

So when it shows a Dell Firmware BIOS update in the windows update before you do it, do you always make sure to disconnect any external monitors to it? Do you connect monitors to it or just use laptop as is? I have 2 monitors connected... 32' 4k and a 24' 1920x1200 monitor.

Do you use bitlocker or windows password?

You ever manually update any drivers? Do you know if you are currently using the updated Nvidia driver?

@newmann, I have a new Dell XPS 16 9640 computer. Click on "my computer" below to see my current specs.

Every day I do Windows Update and Dell Command | Update. Those are the only update methods I use, and I never have any problems.

I use BitLocker on all my computers and BitLocker-To-Go on all my portable SSD image backup drives. I'm confident using BitLocker as the US Government uses the same AES encryption technology.

I use a passwordless biometric Windows Hello login and don't use a traditional password or pin to log in to my computer.
