All that you need for 24H2 is a CPU with the SSE4.2 instruction set, which most CPUs have.
You will need a new CPU (NPU) for Copilot+ and for RECALL, which MS has... recalled at least for now.



CPU-Z will tell you which instruction sets your CPU has...

The update seems to only be for Insiders running Copilot+ PCs according to the site, if so then SSE4.2 is no longer the minimum requirement if they wish to install 24H2.
Perhaps the latest build only runs well on copilot+ devices.

I (and a lot of others here) have 24H2, and I don't have Copilot+ to my knowledge.

If you check the Wayback machine, on June 16th, it said, "Important: Windows 11, version 24H2 is only available for Copilot+ PCs devices."

Today, it says, "Important: Windows 11, version 24H2 is targeting Copilot+ PCs devices and devices that were previously using Windows Insider 24H2 builds."

I suspect what they meant originally is it not being offered, via Windows Update, to anything but Copilot+ devices, since they have to have it.

Nope. Hi, @Bastet! A bunch of members here have 24H2 26100.863 and are happy with the way it's running. The announcements from Microsoft about this version have been confused, self-contradictory, and confusing. I installed it from an ISO from the Dump, used Windows Update to select the Insider Release Preview channel (that's a pretty safe channel, all told), and have been happily using it on two (perfectly compatible-compliant) office PCs ever since the day it first came out. They pulled 24H2 for a brief period after some of us had installed it, but then they came back later and offered it and updates in WU. I think we've been through three numbered editions now. I have no reservatons about it.

Yeah, that's why elsewhere on the forum I've suggested that there's no really sound reason for everybody rushing to get to 24H2, and jumping through hoops to get it. Just be patient, everybody, and it'll come to "those who wait" in good time.

I multi-boot my System One, in addition to its RTM 23H2 I run Insider Release Preview builds as native boot vhdx. In no way is this a 'Copilot+ PC', nor does it have any sort of NPU. Nevertheless, three days ago its Insider Release Preview 23H2 was offered the 24H2 feature update.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

With all this talk about Copilot+ and NPUs, I'm feeling kind of insufficient. Given that I've just spent a ton of cash on a Bose sound system for my office, I seriously doubt I'd survive my wife's ire if I upgraded to a system with an NPU. 😆

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I think that some of the confusion is related to the release schedule of Copilot+ PCs vs Intel and AMD based PCs.

Clearly, 24H2 is officially released for the Copilot+ PCs if for no other reason than those machines ship TODAY. Release for AMD and Intel PCs will follow later this year.

Also, be aware that Recall is ONLY available on ARM based Copilot+ PCs. At least for now, you WILL NOT get recall on an Intal and AMD based system of any kind.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Yes this is true but it's the same version of Windows whether using a Copilot device or not - with AMD and Intel the functions just don't appear
