Turning on Periodic Scanning is to turn on having Microsoft Defender Antivirus along with Kaspersky.
So you suggest doing this now and that is good enough? Or not since it seems windows defender is not on?

Yes.

"Windows Defender" is called "Microsoft Defender" in W11. Same thing.

Okay so there is conflicting information on this? Brink says it's the same but Andrew says it isn't according to google?

Brink, so you suggest turning that on. But if I'm not going to renew Kaspersky Total for a while, I should uninstall Kaspersky Total?

But based on what I posted with manage providers... that means currently with Kaspersky Total paused... Windows Defender is 100% turned off right? So at the moment, I have no Antivirus protection?

I will post this again with some edits to make it more clear:

exactly what is says. Windows defender periodic scan will only scan for threats in the background periodically using your other av as the main source of real time protection. It does not protect your device in real time. It only scans for malware on the disks. Think of it running scheduled scans, but without active protection. It is not an active running av. This means if your Kaspersky is expired, its the main av protecting you in real time. But its useless as its not getting updates. Meaning any infection that infects you now would only be found after windows defender runs a scheduled scan and finds it. It wouldn't be prevented by windows defender as Kaspersky is the main real time protection.

The periodic scan feature for windows defender is a nice option as a backup second opinion scanner when you have a functional active other antivirus program. It does not replace your current AV.

Uninstall Kaspersky if you want to have windows defender on.

Even though Kaspersky is expired or paused, it seems they did not have it correctly inform windows defender to turn on.

So it is currently off. You should not have Kaspersky installed if it is expired.

You can manually try enabling windows defender real time protection under the virus and threat protection settings. But again, you will have 2 antivirus programs installed and running. Just because Kaspersky is paused or whatever doesnt mean its not running in the background.

Either re-activate Kaspersky, or uninstall it.

Simple.

Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be. If you want virus protection now, uninstall it and simply reinstall later if you decide to reactivate it again.

So I removed Kaspersky Total and using Windows Defender now.

But how much security does it give if you click on a bad link or download a file that is malicious compared to Kapersky Total then? Would it pick it up right then? I assume not? Kaspersky Total does or doesn't? But does it always remove it? I assume Kaspersky Total would always remove if I you do a full scan.

It is an antivirus just like Kaspersky. They are all designed just like other anti-virus programs such as avast etc. Clicking on bad links, downloading bad files etc it will try to protect you if a threat tries to get in. Some antivirus programs offer browser extensions. Defender does not.

You can still download a third party malwarebytes browser extension or something else if you would like. Most web browsers warn you of dangerous websites once they are found out of the box.

The best antivirus is yourself. Doesn't matter what you use. Don't open links from emails, don't download shady things from shady websites.

Think before clicking.

If you take away nothing else I have told you, think before clicking.
