The listing below shows the specific errors. I already contacted MS Support, but no success there. I have tried to do a repair using the mediacreationtool.exe. When the USB installer was run, it said simply it could not repair the disk so it would boot. But to be fair there is very little wrong with the on disk installation. It boots well, runs programs well, just does not install the windows update (KB5050009). I can only hope this forum can fix this.

Regarding my laptop hardware, there are two hardware disks. Disk 0 is a 1TB HDD non-boot data storage. Disk 1 is a 2TB SSD NVMe M.2 solid state disk and it is the system boot disk. Disk 1 boots well and still does. After start of the WU problem, I increased the EFI partition size to 300MB and the following partition to 100MB using MiniTool PM and re-wrote the EFI code onto the EFI partition using easyUEFI. My problems with Windows Update (WU) predated these partition changes (which had no effect on the WU problem). I am not familiar with how to ID the boot partition. All programs seem to run well. MS Technical support believed there some windows OS file corruption on my system and wanted to run a Windows Update Installer to do a Repair Disk (keep user apps and files). Ironically the WU problem follows a fresh clean install of Windows 11 Pro where some of my major applications could not be saved. I had to buy again some expensive CADD and other software. It took me two weeks to rebuild my system, complex system. And here I am now with the WU problem. Strange because other earlier WUs installed correctly. If I have to yet another fresh clean Windows 11 Pro install (wipes disk) then it will wear me (and my pocket book) out. So I come to your form seeking advice. I appreciate the higher level of knowledge found in your forum.

The requested diskpart listing follows below, although I use mostly MiniTool PM and easyUEFI. The diskpart listing below shows Disk 1 has 0 free, but there is a NTFS Recovery partition for use by the system 333MB. And partitions 3 and 4 have lots of free space.

In my own words the Disk 1 partitions are:
Partition 1 Primary 299 MB EFI System partition Fat32
Partition 2 Primary 135 MB Unknown System partition Unformatted
Partition 3 Primary 931 GB Windows System partition NTFS
Partition 4 Primary 931 GB Application Data NTFS
Partition 5 Primary 333 MB Recovery System partition NTFS

If that is infact your boot partition the type is incorrect and may cause that issue.
You can do the select part # and detail part commands for each and look for type of c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b.

If there isn't one with this type you'll want to use the setid sub command to set the type to the above value

this is what Copilot says about it

what is Error code 0x800f0922

Error code 0x800f0922 typically occurs when there is an issue with Windows Update. Here are some common causes and solutions:

  1. Insufficient Space: This error can happen if there is less than 500 MB of free space in the system reserved partition. You might need to free up some space.
  2. .NET Framework Issues: Ensure that the latest version of the .NET Framework is installed and enabled. You can do this by going to Windows Features and checking any boxes related to .NET Framework.
  3. Firewall Settings: Sometimes, your firewall might block the update. Try turning off your firewall temporarily and see if the update goes through.
  4. Corrupted Scheduled Task: This error can also be caused by a corrupted scheduled task when installing updates. Checking the CBS.log file can provide more details.

I'm having this issue right now for the same update. There's another thread on this issue on ElevenForums for this, too, if it helps anyone: Problem installing update (KB5050009). It keeps asking me to restart to install the update, which I've tried three times. I wish you the best of luck. I'm shutting down my computer and trying again tomorrow. :-)

Hello NeemoBeer: Below are the partition details from my system you mentioned. None of them have a type of type of c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b. All of are presently using Type ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7.

I believe I could use the setid sub command to set the type to c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b. Just to be sure I would appreciate you telling me which partitions specifically get the new setid type.

Hello neemobeer: The golden apple (of success) goes to you. When I changed the EFI partition type to c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b like you said, then windows successfully installed the KB505009 update. Now my Windows Update wants to install the update again(?). I was impressed MiniTool had a feature for setting the partition type id. Thank you neemobeer.

I know this answer is not very technical and likely not up to standards in this forum. :-) I'm going to post it anyway in case it works for some people. It's an explanation of a basic process for people who may not be very acquainted with it, like me. Please overlook me. Thank you.

Create a restore point before doing this!

When I went to the windows update page in settings, I could still see the glitched update asking for me to restart. I did not.

I went to settings->windows update->update history. At the bottom of this screen, you’ll see “Related Settings.” You’ll find a list of updates with an uninstall button. Choose your update and click uninstall. A small window will come up to confirm “This update and its related info will be uninstalled.” Click the uninstall button.

At this point, you may or may not get a pop-up warning you about the dangers of uninstalling an update. I went on, but do be aware that differences in all kinds of things may make you sorry you tried. I can’t guarantee anything if you ignore this warning. Create a restore point!

It uninstalls the update. Go back to the main windows update. The “Check for updates” button should be displayed. Click it. If all is good, it will take forever to download (a lot of us have this issue). It will install like any other update. I think mine restarted two or three times. After that, you can go back to the windows update page to see if it still wants you to restart to install the glitched update.

I hope I didn’t mess this up. This post is my second one here ever.

I don’t know what computer specifications anyone may need to implement this idea. It’s an older computer. Here are some of the specs:

Wow, that's just what I needed! Been failing at least Cumulative Updates since October after installing 24H2. How did you figure that one out?
After uninstalling Sandbox and verifying it was indeed uninstalled/turned off, found it was greyed out due to virtualization disabled in BIOS.
I had it enabled in the past, so somehow it became disabled, possibly after a past firmware update.
Perhaps Sandbox installed and virtualization subsequently disabled was the real problem, where if VM was enabled I wouldn't have had an issue?

Would be nice if updates would tell you why it failed. Going through CBS.log is nearly impossible. Some failures are actually normal.

STOP trying to install it! I have read in some sites that this cumulative update KB5050009 causes issues in Windows 11 24H2, such as USB and Bluetooth device malfunction, Wi-Fi disconnections and others! I am uninstalling this update from my system and I will use Windows Update Show/Hide Tool to hide it (clock it), so it won't be installed again. There is also a new cumulative update, KB5050094, I will also block that, just in case.
