Windows 11 Home
When I close the laptop, Windows turns off, but when I try to shut down properly, it won't shut down, update and shut down, restart or restart and update. I tried to run Windows Update, but all I get is a infinitely spinning circle. I tried Settings>System>Recovery, but when I select Recovery, nothing happens. I want to reset Windows and ensure that my system is up-to-date. Can someone tell me how? I have included my system specifications.

2) how long have you tried leaving it to finish updates when selecting Update and Shut Down?

Thanks, dracone, for protecting my privacy!

I have waited for maybe 3 minutes for it to update. But, it doesn't give me any feedback. I mean, I would expect something saying "updating" or maybe a graphic to let me know that it's working.

granted it was actually installing the updates, yes, it should have had the spinning circles with a message that Updates Are Installing before it shut down. if that screen was never presented, then it may not have been installing them, as you suspected. you can start with the easiest option first:

open the Setting app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter:

then reboot and reattempt installing the updates. if that does not work, we can move forward with the next option.

I'm getting a message saying "The Windows Update diagnostic failed to run"

ok, go to:

scroll down and click the blue button to download FixWin11 zip file. save the zip and extract it. run "FixWin 11.1.exe" and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter that it contains (its another variation that Microsoft used to provide). lets see if that will resolve it for you. if not, we can get into more technical solutions via PowerShell

It's been over 30 minutes and the status bar is still looping. The message is: detecting problems...checking for pending restart"...

Sounds like something may be corrupted in the update components. Before moving forward, I would suggest giving it a few hours to see if it will auto resolve. If nothing after (I’d say) 2 hr, we can start some powershell commands to attempt repairs.

Thinking I had waited long enough, I closed WinFix. Now I can't get it to reopen. I clicked on the WIndows Update Troubleshooter and nothing happens, aside from the border of the button becoming blue.

The troubleshoot may be hung up in the background now. You can reboot and relaunch if you want. Or we can move forward with other methods.

first
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

then (this may take some time)
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

finally
sfc /scannow

restart the system. then post back.

I'm signed onto Widows as an administrator, but when I paste your commands into Windows PowerShell, I get

Error: 740
Elevated permissions are required to run DISM.
Use an elevated command prompt to complete these tasks.

What is an elevated command prompt?

ok back. so go to this link and download the .ps1 file. i've highlighted the button to download it. this will be much less technical than making you run through powershell commands. this .ps1 should reset windows updates components. if it does not work, we can go deeper.

1735104878109.webp

save the .ps1 to your Downloads folder. open PowerShell as Administrator, and type:

Code:
cd $env:userprofile/downloads

then type

Code:
.\
followed by the first letter of the name of the .ps1 file. then cycle through files by pressing the TAB key until the name of the .ps1 file shows. then press ENTER to run the .ps1

let me know what happens after that runs and you reboot and try windows updates again.
