Would you go to your annual medical checkup?

Mine is due next week, but I don't feel like going at all with covid cases rising all around, my vote is NO.

If your doctor thinks you should come in, he/she must have confidence. That said, Omicron is prevalent. If you have ongoing health issues, it may be necessary. If healthy, it may be OK to just postpone it. I haven't seen my doctor in almost 2 years, but have done blood work and immunizations, etc.

If I waited a year between checkups, I would probably not be typing this, I'd likely be dead.

I only see the specialists once or twice a year, and for the time that Corona has been around a lot of these are replaced, and augmented by phone appointments as I am classed as vulnerable. I also have regular calls from my GP surgery staff.

If I ever get a request to do something or visit some medical establishment or person, that becomes a priority, as these people have not got time to waste so if they need something it's for a reason

Here in the UK (and in Wales) all my medical and prescription needs are supplied Free, I'm sure that If I had to pay I may have a less enthusiastic attitude, (or emptier Bank account as I would still need the help )

I see it that Doctors/Dentists etc are the safest places as they have stringent infection control procedures and policies in place, you are more likely to pick up the virus at the grocery store that has thousands of people passing through that really don't care.

Mine are usually over the phone, the nurse comes out to me when it's time for my blood tests which are every 2 to 3 months. The trouble with our surgery is having any doctors, the ones that are there are locums and you'll never see or talk to the same one twice.

The partners that used to be there have retired, I know one left because of stress but that was a few years before Covid. The last time I saw my doctor, who is the one named on my medical card, was 2008, and he'd just retired and was just doing one day a week and cover when another was ill.

Ever heard of infected health care workers? There are so many of them, that they are allowed to work under certain circumstances. This is an emergency provision of the health care system to prevent collapse.

I don't like the possibility of someone infected working on me :eek:

These people don't have to disclose that they are asymptomatic, for example :eek:

This is a legitimate concern. If you do decide to go, double mask. I did that yesterday when I went for the results of a sleep study I'd had done. I have an audiology test tomorrow and will double mask again. If it's a yearly checkup, have them take your temperature under your armpit so you don't have to remove your mask. I went two years without bloodwork. That's too long to wait. I'll be going this Saturday at 8am when the traffic is low. Double masked. If at all possible, I try to get telehealth appointments. My insurance is good about covering those 100%.

Because I'm diabetic I have to do the annual checkup as well as an annual eye exam which also looks for issues with diabetes.

Note that masks primarily protect others, not the wearer of the masks or double masks.

Not sure I agree with this based on replicated, empirical studies my wife, who has a doctorate in Nursing Practice and is the smartest person I've ever met, sends me.

Covid and other pulmonary viral infections are spread by droplets expelled during Coughing or Sneezing.

Preventing these from reaching others is the best way to prevent spread.

As always the prevention at source is the most effective way to control the tiny aerosol droplets, the masks on those "receiving" the infected aerosol will prevent some of the risk but stopping the concentrated aerosol at source is much more effective

That's what I have always read, too. Note the 'some' protection for the wearer of the mask and 'much more effective' protection for others.

For example, if you want to protect yourself, the prime protection is that others in the room wear their masks, not the mask or even double mask that you yourself wear.

BTW, even cheap masks nowadays have 2 layers.

Health care workers are supposed to wear N95 masks that filter 95% of viral matter. You still get a considerable virus load if they are breathing next to your open mouth for 45 minutes as in a dental cleaning, for example. On top of that, you are breathing in and out, too :eek:

But there is no room for any kind of won't-happen-to-me kind of wish thinking, IMHO. Covid can do major and permanent damage to your internal organs which is worse than death in my book :eek:

I still went for my booster (3rd) shot as I considered it unavoidable. But electives are out for me.

Of course, you make your own choices and that's why I posted the poll

No PPE provides 100% protection, neither for the wearer nor for others. Of course, it helps.

For a long time, only cheap masks (like the ones that are light blue outside, white inside) were available. Since recently, the better KN95 masks are available, so I bought them. If N95 (surgical) masks were available to the general population, I would have bought those. All the while knowing that the self-protection feature improves only to a pathetic extent.

At this point in the pandemic wargame, I will only go to see my cardiologist. The rest can wait. I rescheduled some appointments until March.

A few weeks back I had to go to the dentist to finish a crown. There were many people without masks. I was very uncomfortable but I had no choice. So I'd say a big no.

I double mask no matter where I go. I would see my Doc if I know it is needed but for the past 2 years I have not been pushing visits to Dr office. I absolutley hate going to the grocery store and seeing so many people without masks. Thank goodness I haven't had any troubles with my teeth nor any medical problems. I have had telephone visits. I have had all my shots. So I say no, and I will wait as long as I posibly can to see my Doc.

Because of my ailments, I don't leave the house, but when I had to so I could get my jabs I wore a full face perspex mask that covers my whole face. I have the hospital-type mask but really struggle to wear one of those.

Over the last few years the only time I've left the house was to be taken to get my vaccinations, I'm triple jabbed, plus Christmas Day my son-in-law came to pick me up and take me to their house for dinner.

My daughter says in some ways I'm in the best place, I'm isolated don't see anyone and I don't go anywhere so my chances of catching anything are greatly reduced. Once a week I'll see the grocery delivery man, who is always masked, I don't get much post so I might only see the postman through the window once or twice a week and he doesn't come into contact with me.
