Sometimes I think the deep diving is more about us parading our knowledge than helping an OP with their issues/questions.

If an OP asks a simple question as done here, they should get a simple answer or as simple as possible. If the OP wants/needs further clarification, I get a bit more detailed while still trying to keep things simple. If we need to deep dive, only then will we go there.

You could pay a bit more and get jedec compliant and not have to deal with XMP. My 64GB is jedec at 1.2V/3200. But there's a ton of folks who won't know this or know how to enable XMP.

With the general availability of enabling XMP in BIOS / UEFI settings, it's pretty easy for people to learn to do that, and many do, even those with novice-level skills (of course, the desire for increased performance also needs to be there - if a user has no need for performance, they probably aren't going to go looking for answers on how to do so). Much harder is actually spending a lot of time researching products to find chips used, for example, much less knowing and understand what JEDEC compliant means, to be able to research which RAM actually supports that.

If people were willing to do the research themselves, we'd lose probably 25% of posts here from users simply asking "What's the best {product|service}?" Some people, like me, ask that for specific reasons of a community to get the reasons for using any particular product | service, but most people simply want to shortcut the research stage to get to a decision-making stage without a lot of effort.

Sad, but true.

I started not long after you then - I dropped out of college after my freshman year in 88-89. And yeah, it's something that I have to actively keep in mind. And, of course, it doesn't always happen, I forget and expect somone to know something that for me is rote, basic knowledge....

You ain't kidding! It was not a badge of honor nor a title to aspire to, that's for sure!

I'm lucky in that it didn't phase me much, and that in my HS even popular people were geeky and nerdy. Although, I somehow avoided the bottom of the bottom, and thus I had friends all over, in every clique....

Up to 3200 that is highest jdec, everything above that is XMP.

What RAM do you have? I haven't actually run across any jdec 3200.

I use a laptop. Plenty for them. amazon sodimm 3200 jedec

I would bet...Not as many laptops have XMP capabilities. Most manu's really lock down their bios/uefi. MSI, fortunately, does NOT. I have XMP capability, but if I can get straight JEDEC at the highest rated speed, why bother? :)
