TPM2 KEY

I have a TPM 2.0 module on my motherboard. I fitted it before installing Windows 11. After installing the module, I needed to enter UEFI, to disable fmtp, as that appears to be the default setting, even when the module is installed.

Thank you for the advice. I have little doubt this will also require a trip into the UEFI and that's part of the reason I'm reluctant to go there as my Windows 7 works so wonderfully well on this unit, pretty much putting the need for Win 11 to an open shame. I'll get around to it at some point.

Yeah. I bought my TPM2 device after Windows 11 was released. The UEFI firmware settings definitely default to fTPM for my X570 board, too. Which is something I have to remember to switch after UEFI firmware updates.

But the good news is that, even with a UEFI fw update, the physical TPM2 module won't get reset even if you wipe the UEFI firmware (use default / optimized settings, etc.), so it won't affect any existing windows installs after said UEFI firmware update.

Just gotta remember to turn off the fTPM and force UEFI to look at the TPM2 module instead.

Scannerman Your specs section is laid out kind of different but if you're putting the tpm in the Intel i7 6900K machine, I do not think any magic will happen since that cpu is not on the Win11 compliant list.

Can't hurt to try. I already have Win 11 running on this i7 6900K anyway. I'm curious if it will allow me to install Win 11 without the tweaks listed on the Microsoft site. That would be something. :)

Nope. As was mentioned the CPU is not on the Win11-compliant list.

I've not seen anything where Microsoft lists tweaks to avoid a proper install of Win11, I'd check that source again. I did Upgrade 2 Win10 Notebooks last month that do not meet the System Requirements, a Dell Inspiron 15 5537 I bought new in 2013 and an HP Envy 17" of unknown age. I did the Upgrade using the single-file change in the install software but it did not come from Microsoft. The only minor problem on the Envy is a pop-up about not finding a TPM but no other issues. Neither computer has a supported CPU or the TPM. I did pull the HDDs and did hardware cloning then put the clone in and mounted the ISO file and started the install from within Win10.

That was my initial response too and I stated so several times. BUT Someone here (not naming names) stated that I should stop complaining and just get the key. You can get them for around 20 bux so I thought I'd give it a go anyway despite the fact that I am no big fan of TPM.

If you choose to install Windows 11 on a device that does not meet these requirements, and you acknowledge and understand the risks, you can create the following registry key values and bypass the check for TPM 2.0 (at least TPM 1.2 is required) and the CPU family and model.
• Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
• Name: AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU
• Type: REG_DWORD
• Value: 1

Admittedly, Microsoft does NOT recommend doing this and then proceeds to tell you how to do it. The caveat is there. They've made it much simpler to do now, I noticed. I had to change more than this in the registry originally. Then again, I could be looking at a different page now. One thing is certain: I followed the instructions on how to do the NOT RECOMMENDED installation from Microsoft.

I never saw that page, just the ones that had a number of things to change for a new install of Win11 and didn't need that. I went with the single-file change in the install software which was for Upgrading while in a running Win10.

And it was the step in the right direction. fTPM constantly causes performance and security issues. AMD and Intel are still fixing them with drivers, BIOS and windows updates, but it is like a never-ending story. TPM chips are hard to get, mostly only via ebay and such.

If I do live to be 100, I'll never understand why anyone would spend good money on something that is not required, to just run Windows 11/Pro/64.

It's a freakin' OS, not the program to launch a moon shot. In fact, what most of us run today is way ahead of that which went to the moon.

My understanding is that is okay in the short term, but what if you need to change the motherboard or reset/update the BIOS? Then my understanding is that your TPM settings are lost without a standalone module installed and initialised. But this is a new area to me, so I do not know what the likely outcome is. Personally, I just wanted peace of mind.

And I believe that is part of what TPM is about in conjunction with the CPU. Kinda like "protecting us from ourselves" thing.

I use my W10 machine the most for day to day computing. I am not going to attempt to "upgrade" it to W11. When MS no longer supports W10, will close it and store this machine next to my W7 machine. I have 3 other machines on W11 already, will transition to them when the time comes. I do keep the W11 machines up to date. YMMV.

Sure. Like most things with Personal Computers I believe it to be a matter of user preference. Running Win 11 on non-compliant hardware requires mild surgery to complete butchery of the operating system. If you're okay with that then it's all well and good provided you're okay with accepting any of the potential risks included in that move. Some folks aren't okay with that. Some folks don't want to run on a tweaked registry. To each their own.

Personally, I'm a bit of an enthusiast so I like to do both. Simple is boring. Sure, it's nice to be legit and run a system completely by the book. I want that too. I also want to run renegade and experiment with stuff. I'm not saying everyone has to do this but I have bizarre ideas about what counts as fun. Sometimes I get myself in a mess with it. Sometimes I make new discoveries.

This is why I'm in the process of building a ROGUE PC for all my experimentation. It will provide me a good excuse to keep my other PCs running legit.

To safeguard MSA, I use it as a password manager and authenticator, my all finances and accounts rely on it. It is mine Achilles' heel.

i cant remember the last time i reinstall windows before updating my 6700k build, but i didn`t need to buy anything or modified iso to install windows 11. i had a z270 xi hero mb, that had the option to turn on tpm and everything worked fine afterwards
