I used the 23H2 Release Preview ISO to attempt an in-place upgrade/repair (from the same build number 22631.2361).
ISO was mounted and copied to a folder on the SSD
It took a few attempts to actually install, often the Setup would fail at 'Please wait' after checking for updates. The circle stopped spinning then the installer crashed.
Eventually it did work BUT afterwards my PC really didn't seem right. It took nearly 20 minutes for the Pictures folder to re-populate with thumbnails, really really slow.
And the Widgets didn't work properly. I was unable to add new widgets - I saw a square for the window but nothing appeared in it, then Widgets crashed.
It's the first time an in-place upgrade has caused more problems than it solved. I had an image backup from earlier in the day, good job I did. I recovered that image and it seems ok again now. The widgets box appears and doesn't crash.
My only problem is the clicking System > Power option causes Settings to crash, which was happening before I attempted the upgrade install. Ironically this was working after - but then stopped
Really weird things happening!
Oh and the image version of the ISO is actually 22621.2361, not 22631
