Hi, Can any of you clever people help me with this one..... I tried to install 24H2 but was stopped with the error message it would not install because I had ExplorerPatcher installed. I would rather have ExplorerPatcher than 24H2 so I cancelled the the install, now I am left with a windows update wheel in the notification area of the taskbar which I cannot get rid of. I deleted the Download folder in C:Windows>SoftwareDistribution and did a restore with Macrium Reflect to no avail.... any help?

Unfortunately you've butted heads with one of the seldom/unspoken issue with third-party modifications to Windows, don't know enough about what gets broken. Sometimes a new Build or a new Version install will break those customizations. From what you've written you may be at the point of doing a new full install, get it back to the default.

  • Install 24H2
  • Go to the following link and enter the listed exceptions in your AV. Reboot. After doing so, download the NEW Explorer Patcher and install it:

Yep, I know all about the problems, I was with EP from the very start. This is a Windows problem due to downloading the update to 24H2 but not installing it. I just tried to disable EP and continue the install but it now gives me a Install error every time :( I reckon the next update to 23H2 will sort it if I can't.

I don't know there is new release of ExplorerPatcher but some futures of ExplorerPatcher don't work on 24h2 version.

Apparently it does if you uninstall EP then install 24H2 before reinstalling EP there is another option for the taskbar "Windows 10 Explorerpatcher" in the EP properties. Cheers @FreeBooter

I cannot reproduce it now, as the option to upgrade to 24H2 has gone from Settings > Windows Update so at the moment I am stuck with 23H2 until when or if it reappears thanks @FreeBooter

Why not you use Windows 11 Update assistance to upgrade to 24h2.

Until we know what the installation error is, there's not much we can do to assist you. As for EP, it will work fine after you follow the instructions above.

The error you get if you try to upgrade to 24H2 before you uninstalled ExplorerPatcher looks similar to this one:

The difference will be that it complains about ExplorerPatcher instead of StartIsBack++. I have seen it in person, as I wanted to know what it looked like so, just to find out, I "forgot" to uninstall ExplorerPatcher before I upgraded. lol To avoid the error, you can refer to post #3.

It may have gone because incompatible software has been now been found, and for which there is a safeguard hold. You can check in the registry to see if that's the case. Open Regedit and go to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators
Look for the GE24H2 sub-key. The significant values to look at are GatedBlockID/GatedBlockReason which will tell you if there is a Compatibility Hold due to any particular hardware or software.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.
