About Windows does not enable Copy

Obviously folks looking up the version (as was requested here) will frequently want to copy it so they can share it with whomever had asked for it.

There are copy buttons that you can click to copy.

Just type winver in the Taskbar search box. Like so...

Once you know your version, you can add it to your computer specs, and it will show over here...

To post a screenshot on this forum...

1. Take the screenshot, edit it as desired, save to your desktop as .png or .jpg (max. size = 2MB)
2. Left click in your post, where you want to place the screenshot.
3. Click the Attach Files button at lower left, browse to your pic and click Insert.
4. After clicking Insert, I usually choose the Thumbnail (smaller) option, or the Full Image (larger) option.

Did you type that by hand! I feel guilty now... lol...

My intent was to suggest to Microsoft that they always:

"Enable text selection and copying in system dialog boxes, such as the one displayed by the 'winver' command."

Is that not an obvious thing to do?!?!

It is kind of weird. There's three places to find the Windows version, and none of the three are copy/paste - able.

Winver
And the top of the command prompt window.

There's probably a DISM command that will give you the version, that you CAN copy/paste.

You can Ctrl+C from dialog boxes but not from applets.

But System > About does have a Copy button that copies the info as plain text, as @Edwin showed here.

As for the command line, you can do this at a Cmd prompt:

ver | clip

Although you will have to ignore the "10.0" part. Here's the result from Windows 11 22631.2715:

I tried it in Admin CP and Terminal Admin CP
Tried it in PS too.

It only works at a Cmd prompt. Maybe you opened a PowerShell window? Terminal opens to PowerShell by default.

I don't usually use Terminal. I have Taskbar shortcuts for Cmd (Admin) and PS (Admin)

I tried all four combinations of spaces... [ver|clip, ver | clip, ver| clip and ver |clip

LOL...

I just tried ver clip with no straight bar and it worked.

I must have a spechul, more advanced command prompt..

I dunno if it matters, but... [in C:\Windows\System32...]

That looks good. It returned with no error.

Maybe it's the way your verifying it. The clipboard item, in this case, is two lines because it captures a hard return. If you try to paste to the Windows search bar (which does not handle multiple lines) it will look like nothing got copied. Try pasting into Notepad.

If that's not it, then maybe it's the way you're getting launched as admin. Try just running cmd or wt cmd. Admin rights are not needed, but should do no harm. I tested it both ways. I also tested with clipboard history enabled and disabled,

Both these shortcuts open as Admin...

Uh, no. Without the pipe, it just returns the version info to the console. The point is to get it on the clipboard. That's what ver|clip should do. If it's working correctly, there should be nothing displayed in the console, but the clipboard should then contain the version string (along with a hard return).

Lemme try that...

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.22631.2861] <---- this is a ctrl + V paste

That worked. It stuck it on the clipboard as you explained.
I used ver | clip
