This tutorial will show you how to download and install the JPEG XL Image Extension that enables Windows 11 to view and save files that use the .jxl file extension.
The JPEG XL Image Extension extension from Microsoft is NOT an app – you cannot interact directly with it. It installs a plug-in used by Windows apps, such as File Explorer, to decode JPEG XL images. Please use File Explorer (Win+E) to view thumbnails after installing the extension.

1 Go to the JPEG XL Image Extension page in the Microsoft Store, and click/tap on View in Store. (see screenshot below)

2 If prompted, click/tap on Open Microsoft Store app to confirm. (see screenshot below)
3 Click/tap Get or Install. (see screenshot below)
4 The extension will now start to download and install.

4 Save the JPEG XL Image Extension Installer.exe file to where (ex: Desktop) you like. (see screenshot below)
5 Run the JPEG XL Image Extension Installer.exe file.
6 The extension will now start to download and install. (see screenshot below)
1 Open Windows Terminal, and select either Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.
2 Copy and paste the command below into Windows Terminal, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
winget install 9mzprth5c0tb
3 When prompted Do you agree to all the source agreements terms? and Do you agree to the terms? in the terminal, type Y, and press Enter.
1 You can uninstall the JPEG XL Image Extension like any app from the Microsoft Store like in option two below. (see screenshot below)

Uninstall Apps in Windows 11
This tutorial will show you how to uninstall apps in Windows 11. If you no longer want or use an app, then you could uninstall the app to remove it and free up space on the drive. Desktop apps are traditional programs installed by a user. These will not be an app from the Microsoft Store...
