Hello, I've the same issue as @yiqiangji since many month with the same settings page in search permission, without highlight settings. I tried option 4 but it doesn't solve this. I've highlights in the search environment but not the icon/image in search box of the taskbar. I don't have the copilot icon 'Ask Copilot' in the top right-hand corner of the search environment either. I've also noticed that if I use the vivetool and do a fullreset, I get the little drawing in the search zone and the copilot button, but I can't find the corresponding feature id.

Do you have any ideas?

I've seen the vivetool command below used to enable Search Highlights. It normally is enabled by default though.

Thanks, I've just tried activating the 2 at the same time or just one but it doesn't change anything, I've also tried resetting them but that doesn't fix the problem either.

I did a fresh install to test some things. Copilot icon in top right search menu and search highlights image were missing as usual in my region. Then I did a fullreset with vivetool and both copilot icon and search hightlights image were there. So there must be some vivetool ids that toggle on and off the copilot icon and search highlights image in some regions.

I am thinking to make a fresh install again and compare the ids before and after the fullreset with vivetool.

Well it isn't as easy as I thought. Resetting vivetool on a new installation changes more than 100 values.

I figured out how to get back the copilot icon in the top right of Windows search in the regions that is missing.

@Brink First of all thank you for putting this together, it is a great source of valuable information, my question is more of a conceptual one, we have two methods to accomplish the same thing, what are the differences from a Windows OS point of view, between these two methods

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\BingSearchEnabled = 0

Is it safe to assume that the Policy based one (DisableSearchBoxSuggestions) is the more appropriate one, because by being a Policy it will not be overwritten by a future Windows Update? But it seems to have the tradeoff of disabling partially local search?

The other one (BingSearchEnabled) seems to focus only on disabling Web Search via Bing, meaning only on cloud search without impacting local search? I have also read that Registry changes are more inmune to future Windows Updates replacing the change, is that correct?

Please could you help from a Sysadmin or Sysinternals perspective what are the pros and cons of applying either method, for the Windows OS, User account, continuity of the Registry Tweak, etc., thank you

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

Basically, they do the same thing of disabling Copilot and "Web" search results in Windows Search, but DisableSearchBoxSuggestions also affects search suggestions in File Explorer Search. Search suggestions in the search box of File Explorer hasn't worked in a while though.

The "BingSearchEnabled" and "DisableSearchBoxSuggestions" settings are both related to controlling web search results in Windows, but they serve slightly different purposes:

BingSearchEnabled: This setting was used in earlier versions of Windows 10 (up to build 2004) to enable or disable web search results from Bing in the search box. Setting it to 0 would disable Bing (web) search results.

DisableSearchBoxSuggestions: This setting is used in Windows 10 (build 2004 and newer) and Windows 11 to disable web search suggestions in the search box. Setting it to 1 will prevent web search results from appearing in the Start menu and File Explorer search box.
