Personalization Add or Remove "Copy To folder" and "Move To folder" Context Menu in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove "Copy To folder" and "Move to folder" to the context menu for your account or all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

When you press and hold or right click on selected file(s) and folder(s), click/tap on Show more options, and click/tap on Copy To folder, it will copy them to a location you select immediately.

When you press and hold or right click on selected file(s) and folder(s), click/tap on Show more options, and click/tap on Move to folder, it will remove them from their current location and move them to a location you select immediately.


To also Copy file(s) regardless of the source and target destination, hold down the CTRL key while you drag and drop the file(s).

To also Move file(s) regardless of the source and target destination, hold down the SHIFT key while you drag and drop the file(s).

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.




Option Two

Add or Remove "Copy To folder" and "Move To folder" Context Menu for All Users


While you must me signed in as an administrator to use this option.


1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you want.

Absolute life saver. Thank you so much. I now hate windows 11 A little bit less. I still hate it lots and lots though. I'd actually prefer to use windows vista 2bh, and that was A terrible operating system too. And I particularly hate the fact I was tricked into permanently upgrading from windows 10 by being offered to 'trial' it without being told I only had 10 days to revert back. So annoyed about that. If I could revert back without resetting my entire laptop I would do.

Hello, and welcome. :-)

Technically, you could use this for that as well.

Select the files you want, click on "Copy To folder", click on the "Make New Folder" button in the "Copy Items" dialog for where you want it created at, then click on "Copy" with the new folder selected.

Thank you! :) I think I see what you mean, though it would be nice to mitigate that extra step and just have 'move to new folder', I've seen it in a 3rd party plugin, but it was commercial paid.

Yeah, it does involve the extra step of having to create and name the new folder where you want within the copy/move dialog first, but thank goodness it has the option.

Hey, do you remember that in some Windows version (no idea which, I'm old) there was the Copy to and Move to options also in the "toolbar" in the folders?

I mean the thing on the top where there are the icons to copy, cut, paste, delete etc.
Why do these damn UX Designers keep removing the best stuff?

Any idea how to achieve that in the last Windows 11?

I'm not aware of a way to add items to the context menu bar.

Sorry to be a bother. Quick question: I decided a while back not to use Move to folder, but I very frequently make use of the Copy to folder line in my context menus. In oder to avoid hitting Move to folder by mistake, I went into the registry to
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}]
and removed the {C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13} entry. That seems to work perfectly on my two office PCs.

Is what I've done okay, or should I rerun your .reg file and put back the item I've removed?

That's fine to remove "Move to folder" if you don't need it. It won't hurt anything.

This looks like what I need to move my Public Folders to a new data drive. I want to make sure this solution will still work on a new desktop with the latest Win 11 Pro. Good to go?

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

The context menu added by the tutorial does indeed still work.

If you are referring to the folders inside the "C:\Users\Public" folder, then this will not work to move them. You'll need to right click on each one of those folders, and use the "Location" tab to move them instead.

Those are indeed the folders I'm trying to move. When I click on the Location tab on each of those folders it shows me the current path but doesn't allow me to change it. See image. I've seen forum posts where there used to be a Move button on the location tab. These forums said this is how to move the folders to a new drive. Appreciate any help you can offer...I'm on hold setting up the new machine until I figure it out.

As an option, you could create a junction point using option four below to redirect those folders to where you want.
