Personalization Add or Remove Home in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

Home_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Home in the navigation pane of File Explorer for your account or all users in Windows 11.

Home in the navigation pane is the default homepage of File Explorer (Win+E) that allows you to quickly access and view your pinned/frequent locations (Quick access), Favorites (pinned files), and Recent files from one location.
  • Quick access = Displays up to 13 folders that you pinned or frequently opened on the system.
  • Favorites = Pinned files.
  • Recent (Recent files) = Displays up to 25 files that you most recently opened.
Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361, now that File Explorer is powered by Windows App SDK, Microsoft is introducing a modernized File Explorer Home powered by WinUI. Recommended files for users signed into Windows with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account will be displayed as a carousel and support file thumbnails which is coming soon. Quick Access folders (available by default for users signed into Windows with a Microsoft account), Favorites, and Recent also bring in an updated experience with WinUI.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22635.3930 (Beta), build 26120.1843 (Dev) and build 27783.1000 (Canary), File Explorer will now provide you with quick access to files that have been shared with you. If you are signed into Windows with your Microsoft account, you will be able to view files that have been shared with your account, such as email, Teams chat, etc. If you are a commercial customer who is signed-in with your Microsoft Entra ID account, you will additionally be able to view files that they have shared with others. You can access this feature by launching File Explorer Home and clicking on the ‘Shared’ tab item. You will also be able to view a broader set of file types in their Recent, Favorites, and Shared sections on the homepage. For example, if you’ve recently opened/edited files in Designer, Loop, Power BI, Forms, etc. these files will now be available in your Recent list.

Removing Home from the navigation pane will not clear the history of your frequent folders and recent files.

Home includes Quick Access.

Option one worked for me to remove the Home button.

All I need now is to move Quick Access to the top of the navigation pane and move OneDrive below it and we're back to before the update.

I deleted all my pinned items just to move my list of things I do need to access up higher. I miss the 3 pinned items but removing them also removed one massive separator bar and made the situation bearable for now. I can drag the home but it does not move it only makes links of itself all over. I had edited the registry and group policy before this tabbed file explorer update so I only had "This PC" in file explorer which is all I want and will ever want. Even I open "This PC" in a new window, it has Home and the massive sperrator bar. HOME NEEDS TO GO!

Yeah..., I don't get the logic behind it, I don't get where they're goin with it, etc., etc., etc.!!! 🤷‍♂️

If 'Showing All Folders', the Desktop(proper) is the top of the hierarchy, right? ...

... cascade them and pin what you wish! Makes sense!?!?!? ...

So, why the big fat special Home namespace??????? 🤷‍♂️
It's all sittin right there without it!!!

I like the tabs in Explorer
I hate that  ! I don't know how to disable the tabs! Explorer has been like a snail (since the 22H2 update)! Have to wait to load my folders (green loading bar in the address bar)!

When will MS just allow us to add, remove and re-order items in the entire navigation pane freely?
Probably in Win 12!

Yeah, it does... you have to reboot.
I just did it...

I remember a few Vive Tool things we did on Win 10... before there was a GUI.
We used to have to reboot, cause these are really registry changes.

Now finding the Vive ID number seems to be a lot harder. It's mostly a Google thing. :/
I googled for: Vive ID - File explorer tabs - Windows 11

Look ma, no tabs. :D

I know someone on Twitter who has a black belt in Vive tool (CLI version, not the GUI version)!

Same difference. All you need is the Vive ID number.

Like this... for the Taskbar - Task Manager thingy...

The hard part is figuring out what terms to Google for... and then only using "recent" results.
For the result just above... vive id - add task manager to taskbar windows 11

Remembering from the Win 10 Vive tweaks...
it's probably a good idea to keep a text file with Vive ID numbers (and desciption), you've used.

For three reasons...

1. You'll know what changes you made, so you can undo them if you want.
2. You'll have the numbers handy if you want to post the number(s) for someone.
3. Then YOU will be the black belt in Vive GUI. :-)

I have such text files for some apps (CLI apps which I use most often). Actually, I don't like ViveTool. I never used that (except now, to disable Tabs). I regret (I've got it back to default), because it takes time to load the glyphs (Explorer ribbon icons, they appear one by one!!!) and is slower, top of the most:

I hate (I really hate) that colour on UWP Title bars! That's one of the rubbish harmonizations in the world of UI. But Acrylic with blurry black (dark grey) colour is one of the most harmonized UI in the world!

When I was on Win 7, I always was doing tweaks, especially UI tweaks. Every time I was sitting behind someone's PC, my first job was changing themes, icons and walls (without their permission)... if I had my portable tweakers with me I injected Windows DLLs too!!! Everyone was tired of me (especially my sisters and my friends). That was continuous till Win 10 was released and I decreased my corruption, then on Win 11 I decided don't touch any original files (as far as I can). I decided to be a good boy... :woozy:

I don't like Black Belt (I know someone in my family who has it, and the belt doesn't do anything for him). I started Boxing (when I was 14), and after a couple of years, I realized that was one of the Biggest mistakes in my life! I love speed (I am fast, too fast!) but that's not good. I don't like to crush anybody's nose (my nose has been crushed)! I hate rage.
