Personalization Add or Remove Home in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

Home_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Home in the navigation pane of File Explorer for your account or all users in Windows 11.

Home in the navigation pane is the default homepage of File Explorer (Win+E) that allows you to quickly access and view your pinned/frequent locations (Quick access), Favorites (pinned files), and Recent files from one location.
  • Quick access = Displays up to 13 folders that you pinned or frequently opened on the system.
  • Favorites = Pinned files.
  • Recent (Recent files) = Displays up to 25 files that you most recently opened.
Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361, now that File Explorer is powered by Windows App SDK, Microsoft is introducing a modernized File Explorer Home powered by WinUI. Recommended files for users signed into Windows with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account will be displayed as a carousel and support file thumbnails which is coming soon. Quick Access folders (available by default for users signed into Windows with a Microsoft account), Favorites, and Recent also bring in an updated experience with WinUI.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22635.3930 (Beta), build 26120.1843 (Dev) and build 27783.1000 (Canary), File Explorer will now provide you with quick access to files that have been shared with you. If you are signed into Windows with your Microsoft account, you will be able to view files that have been shared with your account, such as email, Teams chat, etc. If you are a commercial customer who is signed-in with your Microsoft Entra ID account, you will additionally be able to view files that they have shared with others. You can access this feature by launching File Explorer Home and clicking on the ‘Shared’ tab item. You will also be able to view a broader set of file types in their Recent, Favorites, and Shared sections on the homepage. For example, if you’ve recently opened/edited files in Designer, Loop, Power BI, Forms, etc. these files will now be available in your Recent list.

Removing Home from the navigation pane will not clear the history of your frequent folders and recent files.

Is there an update for this on my OS - Pro v 24H2 Build(26100.712) - with File Explorer tabs?
I had to delete {f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903} from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\
... seemed to do the trick.

Home will still show up in the Navigation Pane if you intentionally go to that shell location, but only for that instance:

... if you don't, it won't:

Updated .reg file works perfectly for removing Home, but... what about Gallery?
This Windows update that was pushed about 5 days ago brought them back, I had them disabled, any way to remove Gallery too now?

This did not work on Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.560). I found this one recently and it worked fine.

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

That is an older version that shouldn't work in 24H2 and older 23H2 builds anymore. The updated version is currently in the tutorial if that doesn't work for someone else.

Ah i just saw the latest version you used is higher than mine. But i don't know if it makes a difference which Windows Edition you use. I can't update at the moment so your registry edit didn't work for me. I just wanted to add this info to the thread so other people can fix the problem faster.

This is very strange. I have no such key in registry, and this fkng home folder is still there... Sometimes it is disappearing when I add this key and then remove it, but it is reappearing after reopen explorer window.... Do not know what to do, cause I hate this bs

Ok, it turns out, that there is an option to turn off called show all folders in three dots->options->view which was keeping my home pane reappearing. When I unchecked it, folders like music, video came back, but it was easy removable by unpinning them, and home pane dissappeared. Do not know if it should be like this, but for me it worked... for now.

Glad you discovered the tutorial's point about Show All Folders.

Welcome to the forum! But in the future, you'll find that if you read the tutorials really carefully, they ALWAYS work. Brink tests these things exhaustively before he publishes them.

@Hawkmoon
If you're referring to this option, then I ain't seeing any way to remove the Home from the left side Nav pan here

Also @Brink
this reg key to remove Home from the NavPan that's mentioned in the OP is this
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903}]

And this doesn't work in 24H2, used to work till 23H2, as others reported the same & you mentioned here that there's an updated tutorial for 24H2 but apart from the one I quoted, I can't find anything else for this here in the OP & like I said, that quoted reg tweak doesn't work in 24H2.

Can you clear this confusion?

Hello mate, :alien:

The REG files currently in the tutorial should work in 24H2.

The difference is the NameSpace_36354489 (old) and NameSpace (new) key path.

That uses the old key that no longer works in 24H2. The REG files currently in this tutorial in the first post should work.
