It’s best to remove all but the boot drive when installing the OS. You don’t want the boot files spanning multiple drives.

A couple of basics, one is whether Windows has been installed yet on the new SSD and the other is that problems can exist until any second drive is disconnected from the motherboard. After that try booting and either it will if the OS has been installed but may not if the BIOS has not identified the drive yet. The BIOS action has to happen so the OS knows what resources it has to work with beginning with the installation of the OS. After the OS has been installed one can connect a second drive, usually used for data storage. Most connecting/disconnecting should be done with the computer off.

Of course. I use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to download the Win11 .iso file used to burn a bootable DVD which needs a DVD+R/DL [Dual Layer] disc that holds 8.2GB or create an 8GB, 16GB or 32GB bootable USB Thumb drive to set up the drive and install Windows.

Hello, Marioo :)

First you will need to install an operating system on your SSD to give it something to boot to. There are a number of ways to do this and I am not certain which method you have selected. A very safe way to do this is to do what bfunke has suggested and to disconnect all other drives except the one you want to boot up. That way you will make no error in your installation of your operating system and it will be the first to boot.

BUT

IF you are cloning your drive your system will only "see" one copy of the operating system and not the other. This is protocol. You can't run two identical operating systems on your PC at the same time. It would result in a disaster.

Please let us know which method you are using and get back to us soon. There are also other ways of making your PC 'see" your hard drive but first it is important to know what you are trying to do with it. I hope this helps.

I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

I think tha all basic has been done but the second drive used for storage used for data storage is not installed at all!1 What should I do to install such a drive to start working my ssd????

At this point my recommendation is to leave the second drive disconnected, get Windows installed on the SSD and get it updated and run for a day or two to make sure it works properly then think about connecting the second drive.

At this time I've had 3 Desktops running for awhile and all have a second HDD for storage, Win11 2TB, Win10 1TB and Linux Mint 2TB, no issues.

I used macrium to clone my system to my ssd but it doesn t make any diference since the computer still the same thing and the ssd still the same! Maby I need to settle the Bios!!

Macrium is not very good at cloning. That is why I suggest diskgenius.

Your macrium clone is probably easy to fix, no neeed to do it all again.

First check if the cloned disk boots when selected from the one time boot menu.

If it does, then you need to enter bios and set it first in the boot selection.

If it doesnt boot there are a few possibilities

1 some corruption in the copy process (unlikely)

2 the osletter wasnt adjusted properly

3 bcd entry wasnt corrected ( most likely ) and can be easily fixed with bcdboot command,

You can do both. You can change the boot order in your BIOS and disconnect the original hard drive.

BUT

If both drives have the same exact operating system (clone plus original connected) only original will boot the clone will almost always fail to boot. You must have original disconnected first to boot to clone. There is a way to boot to clone directly from BIOS in UEFI with original connected, but this is not advisable. Better to disconnect original and reconnect after reboot. If your settings for hot plugging are turned on you could safely reconnect with the system still running and reformat the original drive for storage purposes.

This is the best advice. Fresh installation/fully update/reconnect second drive and drag and drop what you need via Disk Management to "C". After you save what you want from the old drive you can reformat it and use it for storage.

    KASPERSKY (no apologies)
    Other Info
I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I disagree. It is better for Marioo to try and fix the clone because it is most probably a case of fixing the bcd entry which is quick and easy

At least try that first.

The least desirable course is a clean install because it involves a lot of writing to disk ( which is unnnecessary if the clone is easily fixed) and then he would need to sort out settings and programs.

If marioo provides a screenshot of disk management window, we can give him the exact commands.

I have a Media Creation Tool downloade on my computer now! Should I erase all the partion I cloned with macrium and reinstal it again??
