Solved All my Google Chrome icons changed.

I just tried MS Copilot to see if the icons can be changed. It directed me to the Google Store to install a free icon changer. And yet another way to get more information from us, for something that should be easy!

Click the first one hold down the Shift key scroll down to the last one, still holding shift and click the last one. They will all be selected. If there are other icons in between, then hold the CTRL key and click each icon you want to change. You can also hold the CTRL key and click on an icon to Unselect it.

Hi Spunk -
I just thought I'd let you know that selecting a batch of the shortcuts to change the properties does not work. Only the first one will be changed. I tried it a few times with the same results. Even MS Copilot AI says they can only be changed individually. Silly me, and I thought computers were supposed to make things easier!

I have found some registry entries but I am unsure about a couple of things.

For your problem. I downloaded Chrome and made it my default browser - Didn't change the existing url shortcut icons

I changed the properties of an existing shortcut on my desktop, changed the icon - It only changed the icon for the file I selected.

I searched the registry and went to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ChromeHTML\DefaultIcon - The icon in there is “10” C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe,10

Is that what yours is set at?

However I am unsure if the impact that would have on desktop Internet shortcut .url
I am missing something.

I mean I haven't put 100% into this, but I put in at least a 95% effort and cant find an answer for changing the default Internet shortcut .url universally

And, we have a winner! I just backed up my registry to an external drive and followed the instructions here above, restarted the computer, and voila! All my icons changed back to my originals. Thank you, Acepransky! Problem solved!

Yeah, I like the big circles, too! And thanks to all who put their time and effort into this to help. It is much appreciated.

BTW, I did ask the MS AI how to fix this, which it didn't know how to do, and it shows that we, as a species are willing to take a risk, and try something and make it work!

I keep a reg file on my desktop to revert Chrome Icons because they change everytime Chrome updates.

I went into default apps and even though Google Chrome WAS my default browser (forever) I had to click on "Make default browser" again and all icons changed back to normal - thank you Microsoft....

Google Chrome likewise was always my default browser since it came out, but I had to make it my default browser again, only I didn't get my old icons back.

This change is by design by Google. The icons will just reset on every Chrome update whatever fix above is applied. I submitted a feedback report to Google which no doubt will be ignored.

You have to put double slashes in reg files. It’s called escaping and is just something necessary for the interpreter to work.

Well, to all those who have contributed to this thread, I want you to know it is greatly appreciated. I wanted my old icons back, and got them back universally anywhere I had a Google shortcut. That was until last night. This morning, I started up my computer, and the icons had changed back to

.
I don't like this icon, but it is still functional, and I don't like fixing something that will just change back easily, to my consternation. At least it isn't the blank icon I had when this change first happened. I do know what these icons are. So, I will try to live with the icons Google has designated. I have other things to battle with daily, that require more concentration and focus.
